A companion to Zen Shorts, in this book readers meet Stillwater's cousin Koo, who speaks in Haiku rhymes. Stillwater takes the children and Koo to his neighbor's house, because she is sick and he makes her soup. The children don't want to go, because they said she yells at them. But Stillwater says she is only lonely and hasn't been feeling well. Michael tells Stillwater that he is going to be in a spelling bee, but that he is very nervous. Stillwater gets Mrs. Whittaker to help Michael prepare. The children and Mrs. Whittaker become friends and when Michael wins the contest, he presents his winning ribbon to Mrs. Whittaker. She mellows toward the children and insists that they play in her yard rather than the street. The soft watercolors add to the peacefulness inspired by the text. Muth disperses Zen philosophy without being didactic. The end papers showing Stillwater and Koo practicing Tai Chi are a nice touch. Recommended.

A look at the life of Jacques Cousteau and how he became interested in filmmaking and the sea. Written with a childlike sense of adventure and wonder this story takes the reader through the life of Jacques Cousteau. Once Jacques had gotten a look at the wonders under the sea, he dreamed of being able to swim underwater for a long time to explore its depths. He finally achieved his dream with his invention of the aqualung. The illustrations done in hues of blue depict stylized seascapes. Not enough detail for a biographical report, but it will encourage readers to follow their dreams and seek out more information about this fascinating man.

Fergal is an eccentric English lad who collects cans without labels from the supermarket bias. He wonders what each can holds and when he finally opens one he finds a gold ear stud inside. He meets Charlotte, a fellow can collector, who has discovered a severed ear in one of her cans. This starts them on an investigation and they continue to search for unlabeled cans to open. When Fergal discovers a severed finger in one the mystery deepens. Their investigation leads to a pet-food factory. While Charlotte is away on vacation with her family, Fergal decides to check out the factory by himself. He is caught spying and is made to work in the factory along with all the other enslaved children from Africa and Asia. But he cleverly gets a message in a can that Charlotte finds and she is able to save the day. Readers who enjoy gruesome stories will relish this one.

Raised by his single mom, Eddie has always tried to be a good kid. His efforts are or nothing when another boy introduces him to a picture of “Jessica” on the internet in all of her naked glory. His mother has always been suspicious of Whip (Jared) and now her worries are confirmed when she discovers Eddie’s search history on her computer. At 13 Eddie has had some chores and some freedoms. Now his mother’s trust in him is gone and she determines to send him to stay with his great uncle during a school break when he would be home alone. Uncle Peavey lives in a small town in Indiana that had been his mother’s childhood home and which has answers for Eddie, also. Eddie is horrified to be sent away and embarrassed by his links to the small community. When he learns that computers are available to the public in the library Eddie’s mood picks up. Then he sends a printout of a model to a public printer and finds himself humiliated once m ore. Uncle Peavey is warmer and more understanding than Eddie has guessed and the wisdom they share opens the communication which will smooth their relationship. Not a first purchase but one which can fill a need for middle school boys.

Ellie is eleven when her brother Jimmy is drafted into the army to serve during World War II. She has been convinced that he would not have to go since he has had a deferment while their father is recovering from an injury, which prevented his working. Through her school and neighborhood Ellie observes the stars in the windows of the homes around her; blue for service, silver for wounded and gold for killed Refusing to give in to worry about her brother, Ellis focuses on seeing him again. (Surely he will be home for Christmas.) The child’s voice is believable as she deflects the first waves of worry when letters from Jimmy reveal his peril. When the telegram arrives, Ellie has just read her birthday letter from Jimmy. Readers will want to join Ellie in her denial of Jimmy's death.

Although Madeline is convinced she is meant to be a saint, the religious theme in his novel is never off-putting. Underlying everything is her anguish over the breakup of her family as her father marries someone new. Hood has used the rather tired conceit of blaming the mother who is refusing to bad-mouth her ex. Thus Madeline draws unflattering comparisons between her mother and her father’s new wife because she still reveres her father. Ava Pomme is beautiful, sophisticated and very self-centered. Gradually Madeline arrives at the knowledge that the relationship with Ava had existed long before the divorce and she recognizes her mother’s refusal to condemn her husband to her daughter. The pain of loss is balanced with the humor of Madeline’s religious quest, which she pursues diligently. Not an essential purchase.

M.S. Kate Hope, age 14, is a partner with her grandfather in a law firm which takes cases no other law firm will handle. When her grandfather falls ill, Kate is in charge of a vicious dog case which has her relying on a homeless man and another man in jail. Set in the early 1970's in Denver, the author provides legal reasoning why someone so young could, in theory, practice law. An interesting read, but I'm not sure how many teens would wade through the legal details.

Ewing’s series about three girls who are Descendants of the Pharaohs concludes with this addition which features Sudi. The challenge for the three is to keep the god Anubis from obliterating enough Ancient Egyptian history to destroy the entire world and send it back into the universe as unoccupied matter. The series begins with The Summoning and continues with a novel devoted to each of three young women. This is an additional purchase where the earlier books or others by this author have been popular.

This is a fascinating look at an explorer, the people on his team and the animal life of Antarctica. Designed similar to a scrap book, maps, drawings, paintings and photographs help tell the story of Robert Scott's two journeys to Antarctica at the turn of the twentieth century. The prose simply and effectively focuses on the trials and tribulations of the explorations as well as the wonder of the unexplored frontier of Antarctica. Emphasis is placed on the animals they took on their trips and the animals they discovered and studied on this frigid continent. Sled dogs were used to pull supplies and on the second jouney they also used Manchurian ponies. Fact boxes, resembling notes taped to the pages, offer additional tidbits of information. Ships stuck in the ice, pony snowshoes, ice fish and the reindeer hide clothing they used to stay warm are just a few of the amazing details you can read about in this book. Even though the last journey ended tragically Robert Scott's explorations have had a tremendous impact upon our knowledge of the southern-most continent. This book is part of the Explorer Series. There is a note to teachers and parents in the front of the book explaining that the series was written to develop key concepts from the National Council for the Social Studies and the National Academy of Sciences. Also included are a glossary, bibliography, list of web sites and an index. This book is also recommended by Booklist and the Kirkus Review.

SECRETS OF HTE SLEEPLESS WHALES - Rodriguez (4-8) (7.3)
No reviews found.
Interesting information is contained in this 5 chapter book. Each chapter deals with a different "animal secret" - dolphin diving, orca sleeping patterns, seal feeding habits, dolphin sponge users, and Weddell seal feeding. Each chapter has information about an experiment and the scientists involved and an added fact section. Chapter notes are appended; a glossary, further reading, Internet addresses, and index are included. This is an intriguing book especially for science or marine buffs. The chapter notes are also good for a teachable moment about citing work for research.

PHILLIS'S BIG TEST - Clinton (K-3) (4.2)
M Booklist (2/1/08) "initially... promising... leaves reader hanging... disappointing... that none of Wheatly's poetry is actually quoted... terrific mixed-media art..."
P Kirkus Review (3/15/08) "straightforward test... evocative images... accompaniment to... lucid text... powerful introduction..."
PM School Library Journal (3/1/08) "picture-book biography deals with a transformative moment... Quall's [pictures] create visual interest... introduction..."
This introductory biography leads up to the moment in 1772 when a 17 year old Wheatley goes before 18 learned men to judge if she wrote her poems herself. Flashing back to her younger days when she was brought across the ocean to come a slave in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Wheatley in Boston. They saw that she was a bright capable girl so instead of serving her mistress she spent her time on studies. She even "performed" for family visitors. We don't learn the out come of the test and there are none of her poems in the book The artwork is interesting but somewhat flat. There is an epilogue that gives a bit more information.

This book is based on the true story of a homeless dog who hid in the Albany post office one night. When the postmen came in the next day they found the dog guarding the mail and gave him a name and a job. Owney not only guarded the mail in Albany, he would jump on the train and guard the mail wherever it went, always returning. Wondering where the dog visited, the Albany postmen put a tag on him asking other postmen to put the depot tags on his collar. Owney traveled all over the country, and they sent him on a special trip around the world where he collected over two hundred tags, and was issued an imperial passport in Japan. Kids of all ages will love this charming story. The book includes an Author’s note about the real Owney and photographs of him with his medals and on a train.

Excellent historical fiction about a boy who becomes an indentured servant. The story takes place in 1839 Massachusetts. At first nine-year-old Ethan sees Mr. Lyman as a wealthy upstanding citizen, but soon realizes he is dishonest and abusive. The story is also about a developing friendship between Ethan and the other young servant boy. Although the story is told well and gives great historical detail, this book will not appeal to the majority of students. Recommended only where there is a demand for historical fiction.

This is a reprint of a traditional English lullaby. The poetic song is about a mother’s love for her child: “My heart is like a fountain true/That flows and flows with love for you.” Soft pastel illustrations perfectly compliment the lyrics. Each verse or stanza is given a two-page spread with pictures of a mother and baby with whimsical fairies and pixies around them. The book also includes an original score, and an Author’s note about the origin of folk songs, and of this lullaby. Recommended for one on one reading.

This is the story of a little dog that’s lonely and looking to make new friends. He finds a group of children playing that immediately welcome him to their group. This story depicts the simple of “saying hello” can make someone’s day brighter and make them feel as though they are no longer left out. The illustrations are simple with lots of empty white page, and the use of only black, red and blue.

As teens often do, this is the story of JoEllen who is on the brink of becoming a teenager and her desire to claim an identity. Told in a series of free verse poems, JoEllen depicts her relationships with each of her parents (they are divorced), and the complete differences between them- she spends days with Mom who loves takeout and evenings with Dad who likes to cook. She claims to have two separate lives- one with each of her parents and decides that by her thirteenth birthday, her two lives should join together. While this is a story of parental relationships and divorce that many teens will relate to, I’m not sure if they will make the illustrated and poetic language connections in the author’s writing.

This is the story of Jayson Porter and the events that occur during one summer during high school. Jayson is a biracial teen who faces issues of diversity, drugs, sexuality, suicide as well as physical and emotional abuse. He feels like an outcast at the predominantly white school he attends on scholarship. Both of his parents (who do not live together) are drug addicts and on top of that his mother often beats him. Jayson is just trying to get by attending summer school and working at a local car dealership, when all of a sudden things start to spiral downward. His best friend, Trax, is killed in a math lab explosion and his Dad lets it slip that Jayson was actually kidnapped as a baby and his parents aren’t his “real parents.” Jayson winds up attempting suicide by jumping off the seventh story breezeway of his apartment building. He survives and faces months of rehabilitation. This book is graphic in terms of drug use, sex and some vi olence. I would add only if you have need for something like this in your collection.

PEACEFUL PIGGY YOGA - MacLean (K-4) (2.4)
No Reviews found
MacLean introduces yoga as gentle stretches that bring relaxation to people of all ages to help their minds and bodies. Each two-page spread shows a pose, with the steps needed to complete it and shows different piggies enjoying yoga. 11 different poses are shown in the Hatha style. Yoga is good for everyone. The author has done another book to partner with this one - Peaceful Piggies, which shares ideas about meditation. A yoga teacher thought the book was good. This is a nice idea for gym and also as relaxation before testing.

16-year old Victor who lives in Vermont finds an old Royal typewriter at a yard sale while out riding his bike. The man old man who is having the yard sale, gives it to Victor and tells him it has a story in it waiting to be written. Victor takes the typewriter to his uncle's cabin in the woods to begin writing a story. He had once observed a picture of a man sitting and writing in the nude with a caption underneath that read "you have to be naked to write", so he gives it a try, taking off his clothes and sitting down at the typewriter to begin his writing when suddenly he looks up and sees a girl peering in the window at him. This girl is Rose Anna a home schooled teen who often comes to the cabin to write and think. Victor and Rose Anna begin to meet at the cabin regularly writing their stories and exchanging them for the other to read leading to a unique bond and courtship.

Daisy Dawson drives her teacher at Nettlegreen Elementary School crazy being late at least three times a week due to her dawdling. Daisy is late because she gets distracted when she stops along the way to school to play with butterflies, worms, birds, cats, dogs, horses, ants, and squirrels. One day after freeing a butterfly from a spider web Daisy miraculously is able to understand what the animals are saying and she begins to talk with them and them to her. She befriends a dog named "Boom" who she brings a ham sandwich to each day on her way to school and a horse name Meadowsweet. Boom has been captured and impounded by the dogcatcher so Daisy, Meadowsweet, Cyril the squirrel, and Trixie McDixie the cat set out on a mission to rescue him. The illustrations in this book will stimulate the reading experience of beginning readers.

Kirkus Review*starred this title. As you flip the pages of this book to get a feel for the set-up the pen and ink drawings that illustrate the tails are striking and bold. There are twenty tales told but not much information about their origins or the culture that spawned them. Most of the stories read aloud well. Some are familiar and useful for comparison. The authors and illustrator note at the end is too cute. While Kirkus starred this title it will be just a shelf sitter unless you have a unit to accompany it. It can be used for storytimes and as preparation for storytellers but there are no tales that can't be found elsewhere. Nice but buy only if you have additional funds.

In a small Virginia town sixth grader Jessie Lou has been asked by her teacher to help Conrad Smith after school to take his bike home. Conrad was the most popular kid in school until he injured his leg and has to wear a brace, so now he is not so popular with the other children except Jessie. He will always be special to her, popular or not because she has loved Conrad every since they were in the second grade. Jessie Lou is a tomboy with short hair which she chops off whenever stressed, writes beautiful poetry which she chooses not to share with anyone, not popular and she feels that Conrad does not know that she even exists although he treats everyone with grace and respect even the little kids. Helping Conrad with his bike ultimately leads to a surprising friendship between Jessie, Conrad, and Quentin a fourth grader who likes to tag along behind them. The three of them form a plan to help Jessie's grandpa try to keep the new mall and hardware store from driving their town's one and only hardware store ever out of business. Children will be able to identify with the characters and their feelings of shyness, belonging, crushes, and popularity as well as learn a lesson about unlikely friendships.

What should have been a nail-bitingly tense novel about Operation Sea Lion, the daring WWII rescue of 300,000 French and British soldiers by a mish mashed fleet of 600 private boats, is instead a snore inducing chore to read. After being caught in a storm on the English Channel, Alec is blamed for his cousin's death and nearly ostracized by his family. Trying to escape his authoritarian father, Alec takes a job on a fishing boat and stows away to help the rescue effort when he finds out about the secret mission. It's hard to understand how a story this full of mysterious whisperings, underground tunnels, and wartime blood and gore can fail to build tension -- but this one manages it. Perfect for insomniacs.

Normous and Lottavim are identical twin giants who always do everything together. The only difference between them is one is a vegetarian. After growing up and playing together on the mountain and reeking havoc on livestock and villagers, they decide it is time to get married. For the first time in their lives they split up and go their separate ways hoping this will increase their chances of finding the perfect wife. Just like a Shakespearean comedy the stage is set for misadventure and mistaken identities. All ends well with each finally finding the perfect wife. They set up housekeeping on separate mountains and live happily ever after...except the villagers. They have a more difficult life because...well, how would you like it if four giants traipsed back and forth through your village and valley? The bright, comical illustrations by Mini Grey add to the fun of this beginning independent reader chapter book. This is another winner b y Dick King-Smith. Positive reviews will also be found in Booklist, Kirkus Review and School Library Journal.

It is sister's birthday and she wants a cat, but when she opens her present out pops a dog. The pet store got mixed up! Dudley, a black and white bundle of doggy menace, goes on a mad romp for the rest of the book. He jumps out the window and chases cats all over town. Each two-page spread ends with the question, "Do you think you have nine lives like a cat?" The pastel illustrations are bright, colorful and silly. Have fun counting the cats in each picture. The ending is a surprise that does not quite work which makes this creative book slightly disappointing.

One and two-page spreads, illustrated with beautiful, realistic torn and cut paper collages, draw you into this delightful and informative read about animal siblings. Nine-banded armadillos are born as identical quadruplets. After turkey sisters leave to form their own families the brothers form their own all boy band. Whiptail lizards have only sisters. There are no male whiptails. Children will love to compare their own sibling relationships with those of the animal kingdom. If you ever have wanted to get rid of a sibling you might wish you were a black widow spiderling. They eat each other. Or you might want to be a young grizzly bear. They like to fight and the loser has to leave and go live somewhere else. Beavers always help out each other and stay with their families for two years. This is just a smattering of the animals covered in this book. Additional facts about each type of animal are included at the end of the book as well as a list of other books to read for more information. This is a fascinating book that is also great for browsing. It was starred by Booklist, Kirkus and School Library Journal.

Swindle, the latest from the prolific Gordon Korman, tells the story of Griffin Bing, his best friend Ben and their "gang" as they try to retrieve a valuable baseball card that was "swindled" away from Griffin. The young characters are portrayed as somewhat stereotypical at first glance, but through the course of the story develop their own differences and quirks. The excerption being the antagonist, "S. Wendell" (note the pun on Swindle). Filled with close-calls which still remain believable enough for enjoyment, thrilling near-disasters and almost-gotchas, double-crosses and a few secrets even between best friends, Swindle will be a fun and rewarding read for children exploring the mystery/thriller genres or who just enjoy adventure stories of kids attempting to solve their problems without adult intervention. Short Synopsis or Review (to be read at meeting):
Coop DeVille is a modern-day pirate with something of an identity crisis. He falls in love (at a glance) with the bored Jenny Snow, resident of the (fictional) seaside town of Kansas-by-the-Sea (part of Palm Beach County, Florida). The story is, for the most part, about their quest for an unlikely artifact, a giant idol-statue made of pearls, hidden (in plain sight) by a lost civilization... Filled with unlikely (and often unnecessary) coincidences, moderately clever puns and unlikely characters, the action drags at times and races at others. Except for Palm Beach County Library System, who probably should acquire this only because it's set in their area, this is an "additional purchase." ...km

Duck is a carousel animal who enjoys looking at the stars, and longs to fly. Her days and nights are lonely. “Then one spring day, everything changed.” A little lost duckling wandered up, and Duck had someone to play and dream with. Soon Duckling grew up, of course, and, although Duck did her best to teach him, he couldn’t fly. So she tied him up in her scarf and the two went in search of some real ducks who could do the job. Duckling, as soon as he saw the real ducks flying, took off into the air with Duck attached. Realizing that Duckling will not be able to fly with her tied on to him, Duck untied herself and fell to the ground; then Duckling was gone. Through the long, snowy winter, Duck is alone again, but then Duckling returns in the spring and gives her the finest gift of all – flight! Whimsical text and expressive oil paintings combine for a heartwarming tale of friendship and loyalty.

In the early 1900’s, Benny and his friend, Sam, hear the circus train pulling into town, and run to take in all the excitement. They help to feed the elephants, and carry boards to make bleachers, each earning a nickel and a ticket for the show! Then they “[tear] off like greased lightning” and climb a tree to watch the circus parade. After the parade, they head back to the circus and purchase their snacks, but Sam soon discovers that he has lost his ticket to the circus. Should Benny go without him? After all, Sam had refused to share his popcorn, and he had teased a monkey. But Sam is really upset now, and Benny, a true friend, finds a solution to the problem.
Esbaum, using phrases like “shake a stick at,” “man alive!,” and “moseyed down the midway,” recalls a simpler time, when parents would allow their kids to hang out at the circus all day, and kids would be truly excited about receiving a nickel and buying a candied apple. Retro illustrations in full-color, double-page spreads reinforce the idea of simplicity.

A young girl tells all about her best friend, Sarah, who is just like her in many ways. Although she was nervous when she first met Sarah, who uses a wheelchair, the narrator’s anxieties were suddenly eased when she read Sarah’s “Rock Hound” button and realized that the two had something in common. It turns out they also both like reading, scrapbooking, cartooning and “dancing – yes, dancing!” Apparently, the wheelchair makes others nervous, as well; the ice cream clerk at the mall doesn’t even address Sarah directly until she notices yet another of Sarah’s buttons: “I [heart] my finches,” and then asks Sarah what flavor she’d like.
While the author states that Sarah is just like everyone else in many ways, Sarah’s difference is stressed right from the title, Best Friend on Wheels, rather than being just an incidental part of who she is. Sarah apparently is so different that she needs to sport her button collection in order to get people to talk to her.

The best part of this previously unreleased Madeleine L'Engle novel is its touching introduction, written by the author's granddaughter, Lena Roy. Unfortunately, this story of a naive twenty-year-old's apprenticeship at a seaside summer theater shows its age and is too dull and predictable for teens today. While some of L'Engle's adult fans may enjoy this bit of nostalgia, it won't be a necessary purchase for most libraries.

Three hundred-plus pound Jamie Carcaterra is living fat and happy, or is she? Jamie is features editor of the school paper and star of the school play; she has a fantastic boyfriend and great prospects for college (if she can win a prestigious journalism award and find scholarship money). Weekly, she writes "Fat Girl" a snarky newspaper column about her experiences as the fat chick, her feelings about boyfriend Burke's bariatric surgery, and senior year stress in general. Jamie and her friends are real characters -- teens will enjoy their quirks. Burke's surgery and the complications that follow are described in vivid, frightening detail, but the romantic subplot feels forced and obvious. Slightly flawed, but overall an absorbing read.

A little on the dark side, Louise Hawes's seven fairy tale retellings will charm the most demanding teens. Each story is a fresh, high quality retake on a well-known classic (Rapunzel, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, etc.) that offers interesting, fully formed characters and an entirely new view of a story teens thought they knew inside and out. Only the "Jack and the Beanstalk" redo is a little weak, but it hardly matters. Highly recommended; some suggestive material.

In 1874 England, Jago travels with his mean uncle, the magician, Callow. His job is to “volunteer” for his uncle’s tricks, and to “work” the crowds that gather at the magic shows, picking pockets. He also steals food for himself and his uncle, and guards his uncle’s wagon while his uncle gets drunk. One night, while guarding the wagon in a cemetery, he overheard a mysterious conversation between a man and a woman, and the man threw a pocket watch to the ground. Jago retrieved it, but when his uncle uses the watch in a magic trick and is noticed by another man, Jago is drawn into a dangerous adventure at sea, to reveal a criminal and rescue his innocent victims. Jago is an unfortunate but plucky character, brilliantly skilled in the arts of magic. Readers will enjoy the non-stop action, and will alternately despair with Jago and cheer him on.

After reading a lot of the election books for this season, I've decided you just can't add them all. Otto is a Jack Russell terrier running as an independent for president against the rumor happy and campaign promising BMOC bulldog and the lovely poodle. Otto wins by listening to what the students want and trying to get it for them. While Wells' illustrations are a highlight, I just don't think this title will hold the shelf space for election books. There are other books that have made the grade. Buy only if you have extra money or really need ALL of the election year titles.

Cavekid gets hungry and when the adults are busy he tries to hunt for his own food. He meets a porcupine, and a tiger but it is not until he meets the mastodon does he make a friend and get some food. The ending while expected is quite cute when he is called to dinner and he tells dad "Me busy" as he is playing with the mastodon. The large format illustrations are perfect for story times and the simple text draws independent readers. While the grammar is a problem the prehistoric impression is good. I can just hear pre-schoolers telling their mothers "Me hungry" all afternoon. This title is good for both school and public libraries.

Kirkus*starred this title. Does your school study World War 1? If so then you must have this book to complete the unit. The story follows Jack, a soldier serving as a stretcher-bearer in Gallipoli, Turkey during the war. He gets help from a donkey named Duffy to carry the wounded soldiers off the battlefield. There are historical facts and bibliography at the end. The flat folk style illustrations give an unusual slant to the story. The writing is clear and draws in the reader. The theme of "Lest we forget..." is very nice but buy only if you really need something to enhance your study of the subject.

Little bunny has found Easter, the book celebrates at the end. But, Easter is Spring and new life. There is no Christ here in this story of woodland creatures celebrating the rebirth of nature associated with Spring. While the concept is normal, the book will find an unusual place in the library. This title is for all those other religious people who want to explain Easter to their children without associating it with the Christian holiday. There is no Easter bunny either. This rabbit finds hope by making a basket that robin uses for a nest for her eggs. This title will be a hit with the youngest group as the watercolor illustrations of animals draws them to the story. Buy if you have additional funds.

This story is told as much with words as with illustration, using double-page spreads that have deep, dark shades of purples, greens, and blues of the night-time sky, the author tells the experience of an un-named young boy who sees the northern lights for the first time. Urgently awoken in the middle of a winter evening slumber by his night-shift employed mother, he first senses danger, but after quickly bundling up, is soon comforted by the sight of neighbors who are also out in the cold viewing the aurora borealis; community members gather on car-hoods as the amazing sight is observed and described. The light seems to liberate the boy’s mother, who makes a promise to give her son the best in life. Inwardly, the boy expresses gratitude, which he feels toward his mother for waking him to see this awesome sight. A friend of the narrator gives a brief scientific explanation for the lights. The light show continues, but in an odd twist, the observers become one with the stars and are shown floating in the sky. This experience is not explained; the plot moves on to the next morning, where the boy is unable to differentiate reality from dream, and is unsure whether the activities of the previous night actually occurred, or if they were part of his dream. When he sees the lights dancing in his mother’s eyes as she wakes him, he is reassured of the prior evening’s events. While the language is suitably descriptive, and the pictures are richly colored, this book may do better in a region of the country where this light show is significant, and readers may understand the story more. While there is no author's note clarifying the starry events in more detail, this may have been a useful addition to help the reader better understand the roots of the story.

Grandpa is rebuilding and old Ford Model T in his garage. Over the years the number of grandchildren grows as he works on the car. One of Grandpa's favorite expressions is "You gotta have wheels." With 4 children & Grandpa the Model T is finally ready to go for it's 100th anniversary ride. As they are driving the discussion (with speech bubbles) turns to the fact that there are many, many cars, roads, bridges, pollution, and less and less open s pace. As they are enjoying a picnic, the discussion turns to the fact that people need to get places and people want cars but there will be many more cars in the future. With the picnic at an end Grandpa explains that the kids need to think about some solutions to the problem because it is a big one. A brief picture biography of Henry Ford, an afterword about Model T, car benefits and problems are included. Additionally, the end pages offer a brief glimpse at "the first cars, cars for everyone, problems and solutions?" using pictures and captions. This book will certainly for environmental discussions and project jump-offs. Car buffs will also enjoy the book.

Using McBrier’s Beatrice’s Goat as a starting point, this story of a fifth grade class that learns to work together to buy a goat through Heifer International is a delightful template for empowering students to “pass it forward”. In addition to the sprightly watercolors, the storyline rings true. Additional resources make this a doable project for budding philanthropists.

Running away seldom solves any thing. But when you are the mouse in the middle, chances are no one will notice. Martha is lucky enough to find a wise Frog, who shows her the importance of being in the middle and she is happily reunited with her family, reassured of her importance. This is a well-worn theme, but the outstanding watercolor and pen and ink illustrations really make it stand out.

Mieka Baker, the twelve year old heroine Chasing Normal would love to be part of what she considers a "normal family.'' Her life in Boston ceased to be normal when her mother moved to California essentially abandoning her daughter and her artist husband. Her hopes that she can be part of a normal family when she and her father visit Texan relatives are shattered by her vitriolic grandmother and the apparently perfect lifestyle of her aunt and uncle.
By the end of the three-week vacation she has learned that normalcy is relative and that she must come to terms with what makes her comfortable. All of the characters are believable even the nasty grandmother.

As Stormy, a railroad engineer, searches for the perfect hat--one that will not blow off, get too hot, or shade his eyes too much--his wife, Ida, becomes increasingly annoyed that he will not let her help. Includes a historical note about the real Stormy and Ida Kromer. -Set in the early 1900s, this engaging picture book introduces George "Stormy" Kromer, who loves everything about being a railroad engineer-except that he just can't find the right hat for the job. He tries several different hats : a derby blows away; a cowboy hat is too large; a pressman's folded-newspaper hat catches on fire; and a fireman's helmet is just too heavy. With each failure, his wife tries to offer a suggestion, but he brushes her off, until Ida finall y puts her foot down: "Either listen to what I have to say, or stop complaining." Stormy describes all the features of his ideal headgear, and Ida, an accomplished seamstress, designs and sews it for him. Soon orders are coming in from all over the world and Stormy and Ida open a factory. An author's note tells more about the real couple and how they developed the cap that railroad workers still wear today.vibrant The illustrations have an unforced multiculturalism (Stormy's cowboy friend is African American; a Chinese-American storekeeper stacks hats; and a painting of a modern-day railroad yard shows individuals of different ethnicities). high-interest story and connections to hats, history, trains, gender equality, and industrialism, this book is a gem for libraries and classrooms.-

Includes bibliographical references and index. Presents hundreds of unique facts about each of the states, describing strange festivals, traditions, contests, laws, people, and landmarks across the country.
cartoon characters Mom, Dad, Freddie, Fran, and Fido Farley take us on a old-fashioned road trip in the family station wagon through the 50 states. Mom is the map reader and peacemaker, Dad the clueless driver, and Fran the reluctant passenger. Freddie shares more information than anyone wants to know. While the book would not be useful for serious research, its collection of wacky and outrageous facts would be great for livening up those boring state reports, . The illustrations are colorful, and each law or fact is in a silly cartoon. Numbers on the U.S. map in the front of the book point readers to pages for individual states. Pages include state nicknames, and capitals are pictured geographically within state shapes. law s like the fact that in Hartford, Connecticut it is illegal to cross the street while walking on your hands or in New Jersey it's illegal to slurp your soup .A section at the end offers more traditional information (state flowers, capitals, square miles, This unique mixture of unusual information should have child appeal especially to those many children dragged on similar family vacations. Like the watermelon on the cover, this book is inviting and delicious. The setting is a rural watermelon farm in Georgia where life is simple and people are in touch with the natural world. Growing up on the farm with her family, March Anne is a likeable 12 year old that any of us can relate to in some way. She, along with her best friends, hate their names, and have an annual summer ritual to rename themselves with favorite ones. March Anne has a pesky little brother, Kevin, who does all the things brothers do and she has a father she loves. Like many juvenile novels, the heroine is motherless and learns to discover things about herself and her mother throughout the story. As the health of March Anne's grandmother deteriorates, March Anne must learn how to deal with the loss. As the seasons continue, March Anne's identity is developing, unfolding into the adolescent she is becoming. This sweet, yet sometimes sad story will resonate with the reader throughout and even after the last page.

Miri, an eleven-year-old girl sandwiched between two sets of twins, finds her "magic half," a girl her own age who needs a new home, when she slips back in time to the 1930's via a pair of magical eyeglasses. As she slips back and forth between the 30's and the present to help her friend, Molly, her travels in time also provide some inside information on the location of a valuable treasure, adding excitement to the story. Although the science fiction elements of this time travel story are improbable, the overall storyline is sweet and satisfying and will appeal to older fans of the Ivy and Bean series. The Depression-era life of Molly will be of interest to fans of the American Girl Kit's books and movies, which also take place during that time period.

This Irish tale incorporates Irish tradition with a modern girl, Shannon, who is preparing for a St. Patrick's Day step-dancing contest. With a broken shoe and dated costume, Shannon is befriended by an unlikely leprechaun who promises Shannon three wishes. Although he doesn't quite grant Shannon her wishes, he helps her to achieve her dreams. Each of the pastel double page illustrations show Shannon's experiences throughout-- when she initially meets the six foot tall leprechaun, to her teaching him a jig, to the final step-dancing competition-- complete with a rainbow.

Chronicles the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama, the leaders of the movement, and how the children helped in the fight to end segregation in the South.
Children played a significant role in Birmingham’s crucial civil rights struggle, history of the movement, with many photos, news reports, and quotes from all sides, emphasizes the connections between the young people’s power and that of the big leaders. Martin Luther King called Birmingham the most segregated city in America, and his Letter from Birmingham Jail is quoted at length. However, when the adults’ protest lost momentum, the leaders’ decision to call on young people to actively be involved in the movement. The racist violence is always part of the history, including the four girls killed in the church bombing. From the cover picture of police escorting African American children to jail, the numerous photos of youth in nonviolent confrontation—marching, attacked by dogs and fire hoses, crammed in prisons—will draw readers with their drama, with source notes, a bibliography, Web sites, and a time line, will encourage further exploration.

PALEO BUGS - Bradley (gr 3-6) (6.3)
PM Booklist (5/15/08) "eye-widening gallery... readers will still pore over the pictures and come away knowing more..."
P Kirkus Review (5/1/08) "attractive and informative guide introduces... intriguing step backwards..."
P School Library Journal (7/1/08) "it's good science... fine for browsers and researchers"
Yes! it has a pronunciation guide! This is a well done and somewhat unusual book. It is not often that one runs across information about bugs from dinosaur times. The book has bug art over a two-page spread and facts about one or two arthropods from eons ago. The illustrations are placed on a prehistoric Earth background. Each animal has a paragraph or two about its size, shape, food, enemies, fossil remains and other facts. Also, on a side bar the size of the arthropods are put into perspective by comparing them to the human hand or body and some times information about what the animal has become today. There is an introductory timeline of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. An introduction about arthropods is included, as well as a glossary (again with pronunciation), further reading for both younger and older readers, and a bibliography. There is no index but there is a contents. The book may not be good for research about one specific arthropod but an overview, yes and it will also appeal to many because these are after all "dinosaur bugs."

Ike LaRue is back and ready for another adventure. He continues to write letters to his mistress, Mrs. LaRue.
We find Mrs. LaRue hospitalized because of a mishap at a rally for the election for Mayor. She was run down by a hot dog cart-who could have pushed it?
Anyway, Ike writes to Mrs. LaRue all about the goings on in the town and the election for Mayor. He is appalled that he and his friends are being blamed for all the troubles. He decides to run for mayor also. At the end he doesn’t win but is included in the office of Mayor anyway.
Ike is hysterical. His letters are so funny. I don’t think the children will really understand all the humor. Discussions will have to be included with the reading of this book.
The illustrations are fabulous. They must really be looked at carefully to get all the information that Mark Teague wants you to view. A great book for now, with the elections happening.

Bea is bored and doesn't know what to do so her mother suggests she go outside and play. Bea conjures up an imaginary dog, Bingo, to play with. They do things that Bea is never supposed to do like: digging holes in the garden, using a pillow in the muddy garden, running under the sprinkler, and pulling daisies apart to make a chain. Bea's mother is like most mothers of young children and goes about her day not really listening to Bea, which allows her to do whatever she likes. When her mother begins to pay attention she is upset that Bea has done all this but when Bea gives her the daisy chain all is forgiven.
This book will entertain the children and there will be much discussion about activities the students do when their parents are not paying close attention to them.
Most of the pages are full illustrations. There are a few black and white illustrations.

Publishers Weekly saw this title as a vivid description to explain how we leave our carbon footprints everywhere we go. Booklist thought it could be used for students who have lost a family member. Other reviewers said it could be pitched to readers who observe things differently, poets looking for inspiration and nature lovers. While the interest level makes it an early book; it worked well for 4th grade poets. The illustrations are not the best as some "traces" are hard to find. This title didn't inspire me, as perhaps should, so an additional purchase at best.

The pout-pout fish is very blue on the inside and outside. This fish will make everyone smile at the end. The text has lots to share and the sea creatures are user friendly. Even adults at the story time laughed at the illustrations. This story of getting over the sad mood is great for story times. The guidance counselor wanted a copy to talk to students about changing mood. This title is good for everyone.

This title is the third volume of McElderry series, the first was Grimms' fairy tales and the second was Aesop's fables. The computer generated art draws the reader into tales with a lot of action. This title was used by 4th grade students and college sophomores with equal enjoyment. The tales are quick and reader friendly. They can be used for starters to help students understand the basic plot and lead them off to find the longer tales. Some of the tales are humorously told and others are a little more obscure. This is a good addition if you have the other two, need Greek myths or want to expand your collection. Buy if you have the money.

There is a plethora of election day titles that are available this year. Not all should be purchased because they lack shelf life. This title will stay around as students found the illustrations appealing and the story will be good for school elections. The explanation of the Electoral College was clear enough for students. This title might work for adults studying the US system in an ESL class (students from Perth Amboy in the adult school laughed when I recommended it but were amazed at how clear the explanation became for them. As the students dress up for the election depicting the state they represent there are no stereo types as they fall along the gender lines but the ending makes it clear that there are real positives to the election system in the US. This title should be on all school shelves and most public libraries.

Booklist starred this title. This is an original folk tale about the environment. The once green kingdom is now a dust bowl since the queen died. The king challenges his three daughters to improve the kingdom and who ever does the best job will rule the kingdom. The youngest plants an apple seed and from there discovers her green thumb. The gold toned illustrations highlight this tale that works for many units. It will be good for Earth Day and for folktales. This title works for a read aloud for older students who can sit through the length. Independent readers will find the language a good challenge. This belongs in most school and public libraries.

Kirkus starred this title. This alphabet title uses the I Spy method of hiding the letters in the pictures and while the cover depicts a large ship, other modes of transportation are included. This is a title best used for the art rather than the alphabet for young readers. Older students may like the appeal of the search and find. The old-fashioned travel poster look to the book was usual and appealed only to die-hard alphabet fans. Not a necessary purchase.

The Willoughbys - Lowry (3-6) (5.4)
* Booklist (2/15/08) "sly humor... deadpan zaniness... great fun"
P Horn Book (Mar/Arp/08) "witty metafiction... cunningly crocheted into.. hilarious"
* Kirkus Review (2/25/08) "fey venture into kiddie Gothic... lacing... with references to classics... sparkling smart satire"
P Publishers Weekly (2/4/08) "quick, sly gaze to parody... book plays us for laughs"
PM School Library Journal (4/1/08) "plot is... dependent on coincidence... effect is to render characters emotionally distant... readers with little empathy... book, even if somewhat flawed, belongs in most collections."
The 4 Willoughby children, Timothy, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and Jane, decide that because their parents are so very terrible, they should become orphans. Their parents are off on a world wide trip and the children are keeping their fingers crossed that there will be trouble. There is an "odious" nanny who has been hired to take care of them - this at least turns out very well - she is a great cook and good person. A few houses down the street there lives a "melancholy tycoon", Commander Melanoff. He lives is squalor and despair because his wife and son have been missing in Europe for six years. A baby is placed at his house by the Willoughbys who feel they can't care for it themselves. The parents in the meantime decide to sell the house. The children's plan to foil this does not work and they end up at the Melanoff mansion with the nanny. This then allows the Commander to work on his candy experiments. Meanwhile in Europe the Commander's wife & son have been found. The wife stays but the son, Barnaby, missing his father is going home. All ends well.
The book includes an epilogue, tongue-in-cheek glossary for the advanced vocabulary in the book, and also a bibliography of children's classic books.
This a very different style for Lowry - humor that is underhanded also the vocabulary is very advanced - I'm not sure students will appreciate this. I lean toward the SLJ opinion that it should be on most shelves. It is a Lowry book after all.

This is a loose retelling of the classic Greek myth; PW starred it, SLJ called it "altogether inessential". Thirteen-year-old Pandy is just your typical bratty teen, aching to show up her snotty classmates and impress that gorgeous guy who sets her heart aflutter. "Borrowing" a box her father, Prometheeus, has hidden away Pandy brings it to school. When opened, the results are catastrophic. Summoned before Zeus, Pandy is given six months to reign in the evils she has unleashed. Funny, witty, accurate when necessary, this book will make Greek myths come alive for youngsters and accessible enough to want more. Good thing this is the first of a series.

The brightly colored illustrations and playful font on the cover of this book are reminiscent of Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series, and this book is geared towards the same audience. Black and white illustrations and irreverent text narrate the story of Hercules Smith who is visited by Wuv Bunnines from Outers Pace (no typo) who want him to save the earth. Jokes, wordplay, and bodily humor propel the reader through to the predictable ending. Some reluctant readers and fans of Dav Pilkey may find satisfaction, and even enjoyment in this slight story. The graphic-novel format may also attract readers, but the book is slight. The best part about it is the riddles, and most readers would be better off just checking out a riddle book instead.

This sequel to Upstairs Mouse, Downstairs Mole, furthers the adventures of the Frog-and-Toad-like animal companions. Mole is heartbroken to discover the truth behind his favorite magician's "magic" act. Mouse consoles him with a brilliant midnight showcase of the true magic in the world around us: tadpoles that become frogs, caterpillars transforming into butterflies, fireflies that glow in the darkness, etc. The four chapters are easy reading and just right for the high-end of the beginner reader crowd. Yee's appealing, colorful illustrations make this an irresistible purchase which is sure to circulate well with fans of Mercy Watson and Frog and Toad.

Each of these twenty-seven poems centers around our human feet in some way. Weisburd, an award-winning poet, has created high-quality poems in a variety of forms, rhymed, free verse, concrete, in this, her first children's book. Each of the delightful poems has its own single or double-page spread and is illustrated in appealing, peaceful watercolors which feature feet in all their celebrated forms. Young children will enjoy the feet theme, and some of the poems, like "Superfeet" which celebrates the joy of bare feet on a playground, will be useful in storytimes. The audience for the poems is uneven, and this book is best suited to libraries with large poetry collections or librarians who have a need for more "body part" poems for storytimes.

Melissa Sweet's Tupelo Rides the Rails, is a touching tribute to the indomitable spirit of canine companions even when lost, betrayed and abandoned and the kindness of rescuers such as Garbage Pail Tex and his Hoboken hobo friends. After Tupelo is cruelly abandoned along with Mr. Bones her sock toy she follows her nose and finds the BONEHEADS(Benevolent Order of Nature's Exalted Hounds Earnest and Doggedly Sublime)a pack of dogs engaged in making a wish to Sirius, the Dog Star,” Sirius, Sirius, exalted star, our swami, skipper, and our czar! We wish you may, we wish you might grant our wishes this starry night." The hopeful canines then bury their bones but Tupelo cannot because she does not have a bone and cannot sacrifice Mr. Bones.
However she follows the pack meets and is fed by Garbage Pail Tex and rides the rails to Hoboken, where miraculously all of the dogs with the exception of Tupelo find old or new homes. Poor Tupelo on her own again wonders what Lassie would do, so she makes a wish on Sirius, buries Mr. Bones, rides the rails and miracle of miracles finds her home with Garbage Pail Tex, who also reunites her with Mr. Bones. Melissa Sweet's illustrations are absolutely wonderful, including intricate star maps, fold outs and full page illustrations some of which show homage to Van Gogh. A very satisfying read although based on homelessness and animal abandonment, this is a perfect story to read to your dog.

High energy fun is the theme of this picture book biography about the irrepressible Alice Roosevelt. The author begins by introducing Alice as a child more challenging to her father than his exploits with the Rough Riders. From there, the book follows Alice as she "eats up the world." Digital illustrations aptly capture that period in history while conveying the energy and ebullience of the rambunctious young woman. The story takes the reader on a whirlwind journey through Alice's childhood, teen years and young adulthood, sharing anecdotes and interesting quotes but avoiding detailed explanations. The non-traditional biography format does not present the reader with specific dates or time lines, so it would not be suitable for a report, but it is a wonderful introduction to a fascinating life and may inspire readers to learn more about this fascinating woman.

This lovely book by the author and illustrator of Mama, Do You Love Me? and Papa, Do You Love Me? is another tale of family love. As a young girl snuggles with her grandmother, the two share the child's favorite story of how she got the nickname "Beautiful." As grandma weaves the tale, the child interjects her thoughts and questions, always relieving grandma's gentle reassurance that she will always be treasured - no matter what. The story and illustrations work together to create a rich Hawaiian ambiance, full of vibrant color and cultural details. The dialogue incorporates Hawaiian words so the reader would be well served to consult the glossary in the back of the book for correct pronunciation and meanings, especially before reading it aloud.

This beautiful book presents the story of the construction of the Statue of Liberty through the eyes of various people. Bartholdi, the sculptor, describes how he sketched the statue and made models of clay. His assistant, Marie Simon, gives another perspective, describing how Bartholdi supervises every aspect of the construction. Poet, Emma Lazarus, tells how she is asked to write a poem to be sold at an auction to raise money for the statue, only to find her poem included as part of the finished work. The role of Joseph Pulitzer and his efforts to raise the funds for the completion of the statue is discussed both from his perspective and from that of a resident of New Jersey. Finally, the Statue is complete. A foldout page pictures her. The final pages are devoted to dimensions of the Statue, a timeline, and recommended sources for further reading.
Booklist and Kirkus starred this book in April 2008. Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal both published positive reviews.
This outstanding book should be included in every collection. It contains a unique approach to a study of this famous American landmark.

The school nurse finds lice in Ellie's hair. She is horrified since she always washes her hair with Princess Luxury Shampoo and spends lots of time being just so. Other children spill milk on their clothes, but not Ellie. So when the lice are found, Ellie can't believe this is happening to her. The school nurse calls Ellie's mom and gives her some information on how to eliminate the lice. Before long, Ellie's mom is washing Ellie's hair with special shampoo and combing out nits. While the treatments were happening, Ellie got bored and began to study the scary papers that the nurse had sent home. She learned all she could about lice. Ellie wrote a list for children to receive when they are diagnosed with lice. When Ellie returns to school, she shares the list with the nurse. It was addressed, "Dear kid who just found out you have lice, Don't Panic!" A child friendly description of the situation is presented along with the advice that ev erything will be OK.
Recommended by School Library Journal, this book is useful for both school and public libraries. The sensitive treatment and child friendly approach makes a difficult topic easy to understand.

Told in first-person in a series of eight-line poems, Matthew Henson is introduced to the reader through his adventures. Henson, who started as a stock boy in a store, tells the reader that he "signed on without a second thought" when one of his customers, a naval officer, told him he needed a manservant on his trip to Nicaragua. The naval officer was Admiral Peary, and Henson would accompany him on many journeys, and eventually explored the Arctic, and reaching the North Pole, with him. In an author's note at the end of the book, it explains that Peary downplayed Henson's role in the expedition causing the two to part ways. Eventually, Henson was recognized for his role in the expedition.
Beautiful illustrations convey the vast Arctic landscape and add greatly to the book's appeal.
Starred in Booklist and Kirkus, and given high praise in School Library Journal, Library Media Connection, and Horn Book, this book is highly recommended for all library collections. It would be an excellent addition to any curriculum unit on explorers, or could be used to highlight the achievements of Henson during a Black History study.

Based on the song "The Grass Grew Around", rhyming verses are accompanied by pictures of the tree. Soft watercolors illustrate the branch with a squirrel, a bird's nest, the eggs in the nest, and finally the baby birds in the tree. Although the focus is the tree, a girl, boy, and their cat are pictured with their picnic basket and then feeding the birds with the remains from their bread. The music for the song, with accompanying words, is found on the back flyleaf. Large, double-spread picture make the artwork large enough for sharing during a read aloud. Booklist, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal all positively reviewed the book. Recommended for read alouds or for one-on-one sharing.

In the beginning of the book Sam doesn't want to play with girls because they aren't "tough" like boys. He is horrified when Ellie, a new girl in school and the daughter of his mother's friend is invited to stay overnight and share his room. Ellie cries in the night and Sam learns that she is afraid that her parents are divorcing. He comforts her, she thanks him, and later at school he plays with Ellie and her friends as well as his friend Jack. He has learned to respect her mental toughness.

This story, set in the author’s native country of New Zealand, deals with a collision of cultures: the traditional Moari culture, and the culture of modern-day New Zealand. In one setting, the craft of storytelling, and the mystery of magic play major roles; while in the other, greed and materialism are the driving forces. Caught in the middle is independent Jessye, who lives MOST of the time in a Moari village with her paternal grandmother, Mina, who knows that Jessye has a special power and insight to the Moari magic…other times, she is with her mother, April, who is not dependable, and who moves around quite often. Jessye’s father left soon after Jessye was born, and she longs to learn more about him and his mysterious absence. This is one reason that Jessye enjoys living with Mina, who provides a strong sense of security, instills the importance of family and education, passes along the Moari myths and stories, and teaches her many life-lessons. While Jessye loves her own mother and wishes they were together more, Mina and April do not get along. Then April decides to play the role of mother, and brings Jessye to live with her in the city, in a commune-type arrangement; here, April has a good job, but she soon begins to drink again. April also enters into a relationship with a money-oriented man whom Jessye dislikes. Jessye longs for the safety of the Moari village. But this village may not be safe--according to legend a taniwha, or mythical creature, lives in the river next to Nana’s house. When Mina must be hospitalized, a fierce storm erupts, and Jessye, who has returned to Mina’s home, must confront the taniwha. We see Jessye using her power to help save herself in the face of danger; and when she puts Adrian in danger, she uses the power to save him. The writing is full of action, and Moari words are used throughout the story; a helpful glossary is included at the back of the book. While this will be a great read for both boys and girls, the cover art depicting a girl standing in front of a river may not attract the boy reader, and that is a shame because there is certainly plenty of action to keep all readers engaged.

Rachel and Adam Newman, 14 year-old twins from New York, are sent to stay with their grandmother in England while their mother goes through a divorce. When they arrive in the English town of Triskellion, they notice that the village is deserted, the locals are hostile and their wheelchair-bound grandmother, Celia Root, is behaving strangely towards them. What is the dark secret of this village? Why do the bees appear to follow some mysterious force? Is everything connected with the Triskellion, an intertwining symbol etched in the chalk circle out on the moors? The twins meet up with a mysterious character, Gabriel, who readily communicates with Adam and Rachel through extrasensory dialogue, something they thought they only did being twins. But Gabriel has plans of his own of why he befriends the twins. Together, Gabriel and the twins set out to unlock the secret of the Triskellion by finding the three missing gold blades that make up the Triskellion. When a television crew appears to dig under the chalk circle and uncovers a piece of the missing Triskellion, a number of villagers, including Celia Root, who don’t want the secret being discovered, go to all lengths to prevent the discovery of the long-hidden secret . A fast paced read filled with murder, intrigue, betrayal, fear and greed, readers will have a hard time putting it down. The character development is a bit flat but the explosive chapters keep the reader engrossed. This is a debut novel for author Mark Billingham and television scriptwriter, Peter Cocks, who collaborate to create this novel under the shared pseudonym of Will Peterson. This is the first book of a planned trilogy.

This is a "factoid" book that has great appeal. Twenty-two double page spreads illustrate just how strong certain things are. Most of the pages are computer-generated illustrations of strength. For example the page about spider webs shows a Boeing 747 flying at 555 mph being stopped by a giant spider web. It is explained that spider silk is stronger than nylon, steel and even Kevlar, and that scientists have been trying to reproduce it unsuccessfully for years. Other examples of strength include human hair (Yes Rapunzel could have had the prince climb up-she might have lost her scalp though), black holes, shark bites, hurricanes, trebuchets, volcanoes, icebreakers, orangutans, and the grand champion, the Hercules beetle. A great browsing choice.

Dudley is a slow learner, but Ms. McCaw keeps explaining things to him until he understands. She defends him against name callers. And one day Ms. McGaw says she just can't draw and Dudley who can, demonstrates how. On the blackboard he draws profile after profile and defends her against name callers until she too understands. This would make a nice easy intro to Patricia Polacco's Thank you. Mr. Falker and serves as a wonderful example of what a good teacher can accomplish. The colorful line drawings capture the spirit of the story and definitely illustrate to everyone just how things should be done.

This title cannot be read alone. You must have the other 4 (Saffy's Angel, Indigo's Star, Permanent Rose, and Caddy Ever After) If you have these others, you will definitely want this one. It brings the story to a satisfying close. The author could write another one about the Casson family. Rose in particular has some more growing up to do. Rose (All 5 children are named after colors is the youngest member of an artistic family. She is having a particularly bad year. Her mother is spending all her time in the shed, ill with bronchitis and painting "calendar art" to make ends meet. Her father is living in London with his girl friend. Her oldest sister has disappeared, having left her fiance' at the altar. Her older sister is spending all her time with her best friend, involved with teenager stuff. Her brother's best friend has also disappeared, leaving his enormous drum set occupying the Casson's living room and her teacher has absolutely no connection with his students. Rose either can't or won't read or doing anything else at school and feels particularly abandoned by her whole family since no one is paying any attention to the need for a Christmas tree. She and 2 friends runaway during a field trip to the zoo and spend the night in the foxes' cage, this action eventually leads to the finding of her sister, the return of her father to the famly the adoption of another child into the family, the dismissal of the terrible teacher and Rose's learning to love reading. This is a story of character development, told in diary form, well done and well worth reading. Get the whole series.

A light-hearted retelling of the most famous Lancelot stories (His first tournament, The Lady of Shallot, Rescuing Sir Kay and exchanging armor with him. Lady’s Elaine's shooting him in the tail with an arrow, The four ladies who fought over who should have him). Lancelot, who is the bravest, the boldest, the strongest, most beautiful knight in all King Arthur's court likes to keep his armor shiny and to take afternoon naps. He outfights recreant knight and dragons and out-tricks evildoers and maidens who want him for their own. Although he rescues Guinevere, there is no mention of sleeping with her. This would make a good read-aloud. The cartoon-like illustrations exactly capture the spirit of these adventures. This should appeal to all Gerald Morris's older fans and those who enjoy the Time Warp trio. A nice introduction to the Arthurian legends.

Although reviewed favorably in Horn Book and School Library Journal, Kirkus concludes, "This pastiche, though propelled by a talented artist, might best have gone straight to animation and associated merch." On their first camping adventure Rae is enormously excited and tells scary stories but Otis is
hesitant and only wants to eat his sandwiches. This is a typical TV style cartoon adventure where the two young campers actually meet a big grumbling splunk who in the end turns out to be friendly. The dialogue is filled with clichés and banal narration, but children will probably enjoy the adventure and will undoubtedly return to it many times.

Reviewed favorably in School Library Journal, Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus this silly tale is about a Mommy who switches her Baby with a chimpanzee at the zoo, a dancing bear at the circus the lazy sow at the farm and with the buffalo at the Wild West show. When she finally gets her own child home for a nap all the animals follow. Young audiences will delight in and want to join all the different animal noises. Shepherd's boyant, preposterous illustrations in the style of Nadine Bernard Westcott reflect and advance the text. School Library Journal suggests pairing this with Audrey Wood's "Silly Sally," (1992) for a simply silly storytime.

Timothy and the Strong Pajamas is an absolutely delightful book. It is the story of young Timothy Smallbeast, who is doing all he can to grow big and strong. He drinks his milk, exercises, and thinks strong thoughts. Then one day his mother repairs his favorite p.j.s, sewing them with strong thread, sturdy patches and big buttons, now when Timothy wears them he has super-hero strength. He uses his power for good, rescuing an elephant, a princess, an old lady, a zookeeper, some sailors, and a kitten, all with the help of his beloved stuffed monkey. After performing the finial rescue of the day, a sleepy bear, who can't find the forest, the bear falls asleep on top of Timothy's monkey. Poor Timothy rips his pajamas and loses his super strength. He can't rescue his monkey, how will he sleep without it. All those whom he rescued come to help him, save his monkey and carry him home. The story is wonderful and the illustrations colorful and inviting. Children will love it, who among them hasn't had an outfit they always wanted to wear. Plus we would all love super powers. I especially loved that his good deeds came back to him; it's nice to think goods deeds are rewarded.

The story of a family who visits their summer cabin for vacation. But this is not a family vacation; it’s the story of a wonderful Rottweiler named Carl who spends the day with the little girl of the family. After a few words of introduction, to set the story, the remaining 20 pages are filled with warm, old-fashion watercolors of protective, lovable Carl boating, swimming, retrieving an over-turned canoe, giving the little girl doggy-back rides, romping in the fields, playing on the jungle-gym, playing baseball, picnicking on the lake front, gamboling through the lawn sprinklers, and watching the fireworks at the end of the day. The final scene shows parents, girl and Carl, walking home at night with the parents wondering how the two adventurers could be so tired, even after a nap. The paintings are wonderful (only 5 of the 25 pages of watercolors have words on them) and some pages have multiple paintings on them. Well conceived and executed, this is a comforting, relaxing book with wonderful pictures

The third book in the Stanley Birdbaum series, Stanley and the Class Pet, continues the stories of Stanley's school days. Stanley finally gets a his turn to take home the class pet, a parrot named Figgy. Stanley is very excited to show Figgy to his Mom and the rest of his family. Unfortunately when a friend and classmate is visiting, he suggests Figgy need exercise out of his cage. Against his better judgment, Stanley lets the parrot free, of course it immediately flies out of the window. Each boy blames the other for the mishap. But Stanley's Mom helps him take responsibility, a lesson we all need at some time. The story is very true to the series, showing children's behavior as it really is, devilish one minute, angelic the next. The illustrations are both colorful and comical. The expressions on the faces of the very odd-looking hamsters are very realistic and communicative of the feeling in each situation.

Adapted from William Shakespeare’s play, “The Merchant of Venice,” Gareth Hinds creates a modern day version of the play. Taking in the darker aspects of Shakespeare’s “comedy”, Hinds uses rough images of ink and chalk shades to create his story. The language is kept in the Shakespearean style but still is understandable to those who have difficulty reading Shakespeare. Hinds has omitted scenes and characters from his adaptation (Kirkus Reviews) but the reader won’t have a problem following the story. The author explains to the readers in a note why and how he made his decisions. Some people might be offended by the anti-Semitic comments (“you may be pleased to collect whatever usurious interest pleases your Jew heart”). The characters were sketched from actual models and are acknowledged in the back. The end pages include a map of Venice in a “fish” shape. English teachers can use this book to help introduce Shakespeare’s original play. I find it a bit pricey at $21.99.

In an amusing twist to every young child's plea to stay up just a little longer, the main character of this story wants to know why he can't go to sleep like all his friends. Of course, the answer is that owls stay up late, and the little owl's parents "don't give a hoot" what his friends do - they rule their own roost. After securing a compromise from his mother that he can go to bed if he stays up for one more hour, the grumpy little owl finds ways to amuse himself until the long awaited, wonderful bedtime arrives. Children will appreciate the humor of this unusual situation and adults will enjoy the jokes scattered throughout the text and illustrations. The illustrator effectively combines the ink and watercolor drawings with lots of clean white space for a look that is uncluttered and appealing. This book should find lots of happy readers.

The author turns Aesop's fable about the importance of work over idleness into a courtroom drama in which the value of art and beauty is debated. Like Leo Lionni's book Frederick, this story looks at the fable from the point of view that art appreciation is not a waste of time. Unlike Lionni's book, this story becomes bogged down by courtroom lingo and seems more like an episode of Court TV than a children's picture book. Amidst the contentiousness of the civil trial, the grasshopper's attorney explains that his client is seeking fifty percent of the ant's summer bounty as reasonable compensation for their enjoyment of his music. The ants' attorney argues that because there was never a formal contract, her clients do not owe the grasshopper anything. With terms like plaintiff, depositions and redirect, this wordy book feels more like a teaching tool than a story to be read for pure enjoyment. It could be used effectively in a middle school civic s lesson or as a debate starter in an art appreciation class, but it does not have much storytime appeal for an elementary school library.

The Big And Bad wolf is once again plundering the forest, gobbling everything in his path. He terrorizes rabbits, mice, moles, and various other animals. When he isn't hunting, he makes hats from the animals fur. He grows so big; it takes the skins of seven cats to cover his head. The animals, afraid he and his appetite will strip the planet, band together to get rid of him. Enter the three little pigs, the other animals help the pig build the three houses, straw, sticks and bricks, bringing the wolf to his familiar demise. Big And Bad is an old story with a few rather gruesome new twists. Interestingly, the three pigs are not the stars of the story, but are part of a cooperative of the terrorized animals, all banding together to reach a common goal. The artwork is impressive, carrying the story, which I felt was a little too gruesome in parts, but is probably right on target for that certain audience in love with the scary. It's perfect for a program comparing the different versions of the old tale or pointing out the value of cooperation.

Written when the author was 10 years old and illustrated by his father this lovely, simple story is the definitive picture book about including others and making friends. Starred in Kirkus and highly recommended in SLJ, this shows a lonely dog and then a sad little boy as they longingly watch and finally join a happy group of
youngsters playing ball. The page layout, using lots of white space and gray tones, communicates the emotions conveyed. The dog is the best role model, being outgoing and asking, "Can I play too," and then inviting the lonely child to join in. This book will be useful for discussions about bullying, empathy and character education, and its simple but profound format will allow many children to enjoy it.

Reviewed positively in Horn Book, Publisher's Weekly, Library Media Connection, V.O.Y.A. and starred in
B.C.C. B., Kirkus calls Voorhees' debut novel a "muddled mess." I, however, agree with S.L.J July 1, 2008: "Frankie is as memorable a character as Sherman Alexie's Junior Spirit in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, 2007...Flecked with Spanish phrases and authentic street slang and colloquialisms, Frankie's story is hip and funny and will be a welcome addition to teen collections."
Frankie, who is in love with Rebecca Sanchez, the Latina daughter of the town Police Chief, and also knows of his much admired older brother's involvement with the "cholos," local gangsters ultimately makes decisions that define his character and thus will give teenagers much to think about.

This book starts out with a shocking scene of Mira M, German pop star, floating face down in the huge aquarium in her apartment. Told from various points of view, including Mira in the afterlife, this story tells of the rise of a pop star and how she burns out from the pressure. Sounds intriguing, but I felt that something got lost in the translation from the original German.

A chess club is faced with participating in its first real tournament. Due to a soccer game and a broken tooth only 3-second grade students and a kindergarten child are free to compete. They are up against HARRY, which turns out to be the team's name not an individual so they use the first letters in their names as well and call themselves the PROS. All 4 students suffer their own conflict. Patrick is a bully, Richard is insecure, Sasha likes to trick her players, and Ophelia almost has to be in a wedding that day. They play their best under the direction of Mr. E who helps them learn the game and how to win. They come in second place and they are very pleased with their trophy.
This is the first TableTwo adventure that I have read. It is the fourth book in the series. I don't play chess but I did not think that the subject limits the audience. It is a more then just a story about chess, it deals with teamwork and getting along with others despite differences.

This is a retelling of a story about a game between the birds and the animals. Bat wants to be on the winning team so he decides he will play with the animals since he has fur and teeth. When it appears that they are losing he switches to the birds side, he has wings. When they are not winning he tries to switch back and Elephant stops the game to inform him that a good team player sticks with the team no matter the score. He is then sent off the field to practice alone.
I have read other versions of this tale. I like that this one incorporates the lesson of team spirit, however I think other versions do a better job with the bat character and they don't kick him off the team. The illustrations are colorful but the animals don't look happy while they are playing. They look like they are in pain.

Mary Hahn Downing can really write a good, creepy but totally acceptable ghost story for upper elementary school children! In All the Lovely Bad Ones, modern day brother and sister, Travis and Corey, are "bad ones", banned from summer camp and packed off to their Grandmother's old countryside Vermont inn. Not able to resist a good prank, Travis and Corey stage a haunting or two after they learn that the old inn is haunted. Whoops! They unfortunately awaken ghosts from the past, little boys of long ago who died at the inn when it was a poor farm. Also brought back is an evil ghost who caused the boys deaths years before. Believable characters, earthly and otherwise, and a plot that moves nicely to the book's conclusions make this a nice recommended purchase for all library collections serving children.

The remarkable and often overlooked life of deaf-blind Laura Bridgman is well-presented and well-documented by the authors. (Sally is blind and hearing impaired.) Laura's education by Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, founder of this country's first school for the blind, is fascinating reading, for Laura was left with only her sense of touch after a catastrophic childhood illness. Laura's accomplishments and fame in the 1840's paved the way for Helen Keller's marvelous life. The last chapter is especially interesting as the authors write of what Laura's life would be like if she were alive today. The book's photographs and prints help tell Laura's story. The authors are able to touch upon what is known of her personality and personal growth despite being disabled.
The reviews in School Library Journal and Booklist are correct in stating that this book belongs on library bookshelves serving children. Highly recommended!

This book is dedicated to providing the intellect a richer inner life on a path to spiritual awareness unfolding the self by understanding matter, mind, and spirit. It clears up the world that intersects science and Christianity so they are both correct in their theory of evolution. It views the universe with cutting edge comprehension and integrates body, mind and spirit to form the harmony needed in life to transform a healing experience into a grounded presence. “Evolution of Consciousness” is a book that merits serious and quality attention. It makes Christianity inclusive and not exclusive.

Amadi's mother insists that he learn to read, but Amadi will be a businessman and will not need words. Set in Nigeria, Amadi aspires to be like the boys down the road who wash cars. His mother has other plans and has even found a friend who will tutor him in reading for free. Amadi is not interested and he escapes to the market where he runs into his friend Chima reading a book about a snowman. He is intrigued by this world of blinding winter white and impressed that Chima can read. The merchant takes the book since they are not buying it. Amadi asks the boys down the road about snow and they do not believe there could be such a thing. When Amadi returns to the bookstall he sees his tutor buying the snowman book and he is very disappointed until they finally meet for a lesson and she brings the book for him. Amadi no longer wants to wash cars for money but instead he wishes to learn to read so he will keep learning new things.
A great book to inspire the reluctant reader and also a great addition for diversity. It also points out how fortunate our students are to be in school and able to learn everyday. I think it will prompt discussion. The illustrations beautifully depict Nigeria or what I imagine it might look like. Students in NJ will be amazed that Amadi does not know what snow is and although the book does not come right out and say the characters are poor the more astute student will infer this and understand the author's purpose.

The cat is having an adventure inside a house. He causes destruction in the kitchen, closet, bedroom and art studio. It all started because "someone" left the window open and the cat jumped in. After each catastrophe the owner who is only partially shown says "Cat? Out!" All ends well in the art studio when a walk in the paint has the cat create a heart for the owner, who we finally see when cat jumps in her arms.
The text is full of action verbs as the cat jumps, sniffs, snoops, tumbles, and dashes. The type lends itself to the cat's movement and the illustrations hold foreshadowing clues about the owner. The children that you read this story aloud to will quickly catch on and participate in the repetitive text when the "someone" discovers the messes and tells the cat to get out. I think they will ask you to read it again.

Leonard Marcus has updated his fine 1998 edition, which celebrated 60 years of Caldecott Medal awards,by adding a chapter on Mordecai Gerstein to honor 70 years of Caldecott awards.
In his 1998 edition, Marcus selected a winning picture book artist from each of the Caldecott decades and presented biographical information as well as facts about each artist's individual style. What he created back then was a highly readable and enjoyable book, sharing charming tidbits such as how Robert McCloskey's ducklings were renamed and how Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are actually evolved as a picture book. The charm of each original chapter still exists in this new addition and Marcus' coverage of Gerstein's The Man Who Walked Between the Towers is memorable. This is a recommended purchase for all libraries not owning the 1998 edition. The reviewer feels that this book belongs in a professional collection for teachers to use in inspiring their students.

Pete is a pink poodle who stars in a circus. He has a falling out with his partner, Rita the chimp, who tries to upstage him. Pete gets angry and in the chaos ends up biting the ringmaster. As a result, all of the animals in the show give Pete the silent treatment until he apologizes, which he refuses to do. Pete decides to run away, but as he is arguing with Rita about his plan, the two of them get caught up in a twister (one of a number of references to The Wizard of Oz). They end up on a farm, but are so happy to see each other alive they become friends again. They also befriend Quackers, a duck who has always wanted to be in show biz. They find out they are in Kansas, but know that their circus was heading south to Florida, so with Quackers pointing the way, they begin their journey. Along the way, they encounter and overcome many obstacles, while making more friends. Eventually they find their way back to their circus friends who give them a hero’s welcome. Not only do Peter and Rita become partners again, Quackers joins their act to make them a star trio. Readers will enjoy the humorous characters and dialogue, as well as their zany adventure. Pete realizes in the end, “Sometimes you have to lose a thing to find out how much it means to you. . . . There really is no place like home.”

This is a nice story for helping children who are starting school for the first time get over their jitters. The perspective is a bit different from other stories covering this familiar topic in that the child is the one helping someone else, Dinosaur, getting over his fears. It’s told in a question and answer format: “What would you do if on the very first day of school Dinosaur wasn’t smiling his big, toothy dinosaur smile? You’d say, ‘Don’t worry, Dinosaur. School will be fun!’” A wide range of worries are covered, including fear of getting lost, fear of not finding something good to eat in the cafeteria, and fear of not finding someone to play with on the playground. Dinosaur and the child who is helping him overcome his fears both find someone who is also a bit shy. They become friends and by the end of the day Dinosaur is excited to return to school the following day.

All of the poems in this collection perfectly capture many of the moments and feelings of young ball players. They span a full year of baseball dreams, memories, and experiences. The book begins with a poem called “Snow Baseball” where a group of friends fling snowballs on their snow-covered ball field. This is followed by “Fielder’s Mitt”, about a baseball glove waiting on the shelf until winter is over. As the baseball season begins, the reader is treated to poems about “First Practice”, “Gramps’s Tough Pitches”, and “First Loss”, as well as poems about a Dad hitting pop-ups on a summer evening, a Mom who enjoys playing, watching, and reading about baseball as much as her son, and Ted, a teammate who spends most of his time on the bench, but still loves being a member of the team. Several other poems, such as those about superstitions, playing ball at dusk, and being rained out, also describe emotions and experiences with which all ball players are familiar. Finally, the book ends with poems describing the last game of the season, a barren field in December, and a snow-covered field in February waiting for spring to arrive again. Many of the poems do not rhyme, emphasizing to children that a poem simply needs to be descriptive enough to create an image in one’s mind and/or make one feel like they are actually there. The colorful, playful illustrations nicely complement the poems as well.

This is a very interesting and well-written book about Charles Darwin’s studies as a naturalist and how he developed his theory of evolution. The book does not mention religion at all but simply notes that his theory, which he referred to as transmutation, was controversial when he first proposed it and remains an issue of debate today. The author indicates that the debate is between those who believe each living thing was created exactly as it is today and those who support the idea that animals and plants have changed over time. The bulk of the book follows Darwin’s voyage on the Beagle, identifying the locations he visited, the plants and animals he studied, and the observations he made that led to his questions about whether animals adapted to their environment or were created for that environment. The text is presented on colorful pages with illustrations of the many environments Darwin experienced on his journey. Every other page includes a box with an additional in triguing fact about an animal that Darwin studied. A map of the Beagle’s journey, a glossary, an index, and a list of books and websites for additional information round out this informative book.

This is a nice story about a father and daughter who spend the day together fishing. The daughter is telling the story and frequently tells how Papa does something, followed by “that’s papa’s way,” and then how she does something, followed by “that’s my way.” The repetition of the phrase gets old after awhile, but for those in need of stories about father/daughter bonding, this book with warm, comforting illustrations will make a nice addition.

Fans of this series will enjoy this installment with the usual cast of unusual characters: private eye Chet Gecko, his partner Natalie the crow, librarian Cool Beans, principal Zero, teacher Mr. Ratnose, and a menagerie of other humorously named folks. Jokes, puns, and other plays on words run rampant throughout the story. But the story itself gets lost at times as this book has a group of Wicca students performing spells, a Russian inventor creating machines to replace various workers at the school, and strange behavior occurring among the whole student body, which Chet and Natalie suspect could be the result of someone putting something funny in the cafeteria food. The convoluted solution to the mystery may be confusing for some readers, but if they are fans of Chet Gecko, they will enjoy the humor throughout the book.

This is a beautifully told and illustrated story about a boy whose family lives in an area reduced to rubble. It is never explained why this is or where exactly his family is located, but it appears to be an area ravaged by war and divided by a barbed wire fence. One day the boy notices a small sprout of green among the rubble and he finds a bucket of rain with which to water it. He creates protection for it so it can get some shade and eventually the sprout becomes a flowing vine that covers the wire fence. The area becomes a colorful playground for the children as the ever-spreading vine attracts birds and butterflies. But one day soldiers from the other side of the fence tear the vine down, saddening the boy. After a long winter, the boy notices some sprouts on the other side of the fence that must have been created from seeds that his vine dropped the previous spring. A girl on the other side of the fence begins taking care of the sprouts. As her vine grows, the soldiers don’t seem to mind the plant growing on that side of the fence. Eventually sprouts also begin to grow on the boy’s side. Again color, life, and beauty are brought to the ravaged landscape, and this time the boy thinks to himself, “Let the soldiers return. . . . Roots are deep, and seeds spread.” His vine gives him hope that someday the fence will be torn down and he will be free to walk throughout the land. This is not only a beautiful story in and of itself, but can also be a discussion starter for units about war and peace.

Nostalgic fans of the game will enjoy the archival photographs throughout this book from the Baseball Hall of Fame. For those just learning about the game itself, the ABC format with definitions and illustrations of basic terms will be most helpful (e.g, dugout, infield, outfield, home plate, etc.). Unfortunately, a few of the terms are written in script rather than printed, thus making them illegible for primary students. Overall, a nicely designed ABC baseball book.

P.S. & E.S. The author/illustrator of "Bats at the Beach" has created another winning picture book with "Bats at the Library." It will take several readings to catch all the little details in the illustrations that make these books so charming. In this installment, the playful bats are having a night out at the library. They romp through the water fountain, make pictures of themselves in the photo copier, and explore the pop-up gingerbread house before settling in for storytime. Some of the best illustrations are those in which the bats imagine themselves in classic stories. There are bat versions of such tales as Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland, Make Way for Ducklings, and Winnie the Pooh. The illustrations for each are reminiscent of the style used in the original versions. This is a delightful picture book, great for sharing.

E.S. A lovely inter-generational story about the longing a young girl has for her Grandma's beautiful hat. Clara B. seeks out the hat at church and always positions herself right behind it so as to copy every movement that hat makes. Then comes a test of patience when Grandma must shop for, prepare, serve and clean up Sunday Supper and Clara B. is forced to wait to put the beautiful hat away in its hatbox. Of course, a conflict arises when Clara B. takes the hat from the lap of her sleeping Grandma and attempts to put it away herself. I enjoyed this story, the warmth of the family depicted and the joyous mood of the church. A thoughtful touch is the explanation of "Mother's Sunday", a tradition in many Baptist churches, given at the end of this book. Frank Morrison's colorful, personality filled art was the perfect complement to this story.

P.S. "Harriet's Had Enough!" tells the story of a young raccoon who does not feel like picking her toys up and putting them away. She talks back to her mother and an angry moment ensues. Unfortunately I did not find Harriet a likable enough character to warrant much sympathy. After the disagreement with her mother, Harriet packs her things and is intent on running away. She then experiences very obviously written life lessons from her grandmother and father and ultimately everyone "pitches in" to clean up the house and garden and live happily ever after. Paul Meisel's semi-primitive style artwork, rendered in watercolor, acrylic and gouache, is pleasant enough on the eyes, too bad Harriet wasn't an equally pleasant character to read about.

E.S.
The illustrations in this book are in keeping with some of Valerie Gorbachev’s other books, very colorful and whimsical with the scratchy pen marks overlaying the color pictures. If you are familiar with this author’s work, the illustrations are very recognizable.
The book starts off with Mother Hen hanging up laundry with her 7 chicks. Mrs. Duck comes by and says hello and comments on how busy everyone is and as it turns out, one of the baby chicks is missing. Well from here, the story takes on a bit of panic as they proceed to search for the missing chick.
An expectant cast of characters is introduced; Neighbor Goat, Neighbor Sheep, Neighbor Pig, as they all begin to help search for the chick. The police arrive on the scene, a couple of uniformed dogs. A detective came on the case and starts questioning the neighbors, looking for footprints, and talking to the little chick’s brothers and sisters. The chick was nowhere to be found.
As the book progresses, the search becomes more dramatic and more and more people get involved. Everyone is in a panic, frantically searching and calling out for “little chick.” As you can well expect, there is a happy ending, though I found it to be very dull and anti-climactic. Everyone is very happy when little chick is found and Mrs. Duck says, “Don’t get lost again, little chick!” Then the book ends with little chick’s reply, “Oh, I won’t, Mrs. Duck! I promise!”
This book is cute and mildly entertaining, with colorful pictures. I would say a pre-school audience would likely find this story silly and fun, but first graders and up may begin to find it dull and babyish, for lack of a better word.

This was a very powerful story of slavery and the Underground Railroad told from the perspective of a little girl, as she sees the life her mother, is living as a slave. “Mama works hard in the field, Mama’s hands are bleeding ‘cause she pick so much cotton. I’m too little, but I wish I could help.”
Dialogue likes this continues throughout the book as the daughter shows amazing compassion and empathy for her mama. On the opposite side, her mama shows deep compassion for her daughter. After her long days of slaving in the fields, she would “come home and pick up her needle and thread. Mama’s gonna make a new quilt.”
One day when Mama came home, she had whip marks and “her shirt is torn where the whip cut her back. Mama takes off her shirt and cuts out a big heart.” We later find out that the quilt she is making is going to act as directions for her daughter as she sends her off with the Underground Railroad. “A log cabin means a place is safe. This star is the brightest in the sky; it’s for you to follow. The moss should only be growin’ on the side of the tree in the direction you are headed” and “This little girl…is the most loved in all the world.” She wakes her daughter up in the middle of the night and takes her to a “meeting” deep in the forest. “You must go with these people, child. I can’t go with you, but they’ll help you find freedom.” The little girl goes but does not want to and the mama cries and the little girl asks, “Why can’t you come, too?” Mama responds, “I got to stay, help others find Freedom.”
The interest level is indicated as grades K-3, however I feel this story is better suited for grades 3-6. The content, while told from a little girl’s point of view, is heavy and complex. The pictures are dark and dreary, but beautifully painted and blend very well with the overall theme and tone of the story. It is a beautiful and well told story that while it is fiction, centers on a very real time in our history.

H.S. Told in first person, each chapter is narrated by one of three girls who live at the Ospedale della Pieta, an orphanage and music school during 18th century Venice, Italy. The story takes place during a six year period of Antonio Vivaldi’s life, where he worked as a violin teacher for the girls who lived at the orphanage. The three girls, Anetta, Rosalba, who are 15 years old, and Luisa who is almost 14, are all searching for love while contemplating their futures. Nurturing Anetta is a doting friend to Luisa where at times it is overbearing for her. Rosalba is a high-spirited girl, always looking for ways to escape from her lessons to see the “wild” side of life, but when she is raped, she grows up quickly since she is forbidden to return to the Ospedale. Luisa is the illegitimate daughter of a duke who had an affair with her mother. At a very young age, Luisa was sent to the Ospedale to live and develop her voice. When she comes down with a near-fatal illness, she is sent to the country to heal. There she meets a boy who she has a brief affair with before sent back to the Ospedale. Each girl develops in her own way throughout the novel. The author paints a beautiful picture of life in the orphanage/music school during in the early 1700s in Venice. The novel brings in musical themes and Italian phrases in this historical novel, which adds much color to the story. Readers of historical fiction will enjoy the unique setting of Venice, the spirited Vivaldi, and the friendship of these three girls as they come of age.

What does a hungry baby do when his tummy won’t stop rumbling? After devouring every snack his mom and the refrigerator have to offer, the ravenous baby moves outside and begins to eat everything in sight. Harry’s monstrous appetite isn’t satisfied until he tries to take a bite of the moon and finally surrenders to an equally powerful need for sleep. Retro style illustrations show Harry as a rapidly expanding, diaper clad baby with an oversized head. Some might find this amusing, while others will find the pictures odd. The tall tale of the havoc wrought by a hungry baby will likely have the same effect - some will be entertained and some will be left cold. If library budgets are stretched thin, this limited appeal book is not a necessary purchase.

When he reads the message, “Have a wild Father’s Day” on his card, one fun-loving dad decides to follow that advice. He and his two children spend an action packed day mimicking wild animals. After hopping like kangaroos, racing like cheetahs, and swimming like dolphins, this physically fit family finally snuggles up like tired puppies at the end of the day. Brightly colored illustrations depict the action, showcasing both the frolicking humans and their animal counterparts. This simple story aptly captures the physical nature of a loving father child relationship and is a sweet addition to a holiday book collection.

The team who created Armadilly Chilly (2004) (a Texas version of The Little Red Hen) is back with this
east Texas swamp setting for The Three Little Pigs. Big Bottomed Boar threatens the little gators who have built their houses of sand and sticks with, "Wiggle my Rump with a Bump Bump Bump and smash your house." When the Boar gets to the gator who build his home of rocks of course, they build a fire and the Boar gets grill streaks on his big bottom. Illlustrated with big eyed colorful characters this will be a great read aloud and might be paired with a traditional "Three Little Pigs," and/or Ken Geist's "Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark."

The class is going on a field trip to the apple farm. They start with 20 in this counting book and count backwards to 1. Along the way the students encounter all kinds of math opportunities. There are addition problems that can be solved, time to tell, and even a little multiplication. The end papers are full of apple facts and there is some foreshadowing about the thing that will be number one, Lee has a loose tooth. This is more than a simple counting book and readers encounter more math on a page than just the backwards count down. The illustrations are colorful and the text tells a nice story about a class trip.

They spend the rest of the day playing, picking out names, and getting to know each other. Whatsit becomes the dog’s name and Rita even discovers that the dog can speak to her. The illustrations are very simple drawings in black and white with red accents. The text is a narrative and tells a cute story.

A girl in math class has gotten stuck on her multiplication facts. This leads to an explosion of numbers from her head. The numbers fly all over the room and the teacher sends her to the nurse. Each time she asked to answer 7 X 10 this explosion is the result. The police are called as well as the National Guard to rectify the problem. The numbers also cause a problem with the phones, at the grocery store and with the town clock. Finally the little girl’s brain begins to compute and the answer, 70 pops out. All is well until the next day when the teacher asks her what is 9 X 11. The text is a clever rhyme and the illustrations are exaggerated collage. The story will entertain and make the audience laugh.

Bert’s sister recalls the beginning of her brother’s pet collecting hobby. It started out small but has grown to include a gorilla, a lion, and some ostriches. She is telling all of this to the reader from the living room. There is a sign on his door that of course says “No Girls Allowed”. In her imagination she sees a great ruckus going on with all the animals in there. She doesn’t go in the bedroom but she does let the animals out into the rest of the house until she notices her brother coming home and pushes them all back in. Bert of course has come home with an elephant and she worries about what the neighbors will think. It is an entertaining read aloud with a nice rhyming text. The animals that live in Bert’s room are recognizable as well as new to the reader, which could lead to further reading about the new animals.

H.S. : Sitomer returns with a new book featuring a minor character, Sonia Rodriguez, from his book, Hip-Hop High School. Sonia is the oldest daughter of seven children, born in the United States to her illegal immigrant Mexican parents. Her biggest dream is to be the first person in her family to graduate from high school. She doesn’t want to end up a statistic, another Hispanic girl getting pregnant and dropping out of high school. But Sonia has many obstacles in her way. Sonia’s story is part modern day Cinderella fairy tale, as she must forgo her studies until late at night, so she can take care of her bed-ridden pregnant mother (who refuses to learn English after being here for 16 years), her useless brothers, her drunken and abusive uncle who tries to rape her, and keep house. Sonia’s first person narrative brings light to the issue of the Latino community, the stereotypes, her innermost feelings of being treated like a servan t and her love for her first boyfriend who is from El Salvador. But when Sonia is sent away to Mexico (her domineering aunt felt she was possessed by the devil) she returns with a new respect of her roots. With the help of her guidance counselor and the strong love of her father, Sonia begins to regain her life. Teenagers will laugh and cry as they listen to Sonia’s strong voice express her anger, sorrow, and humor about her life and dreams. Sitomer captures the essence of high school culture and teen issues. Recommended by School Library Journal, Booklist, Horn Book, and Kirkus Reviews.

HS: This unique story by Whitcomb is a fascinating journey of the Christian-based vision of the afterlife. Calder, a 19 year-old boy who died 350 years ago, is a Fetch, a person who has died and now escorts souls of the dead to heaven. When Calder was summoned to the Death Scene of a young boy, he prevents the death because he falls in love with a mortal girl, a girl he assumes is the boy’s nanny. Years later, he is summoned to the Death Scene of Grigori Rasputin. He convinces Rasputin to allow him to take over his body for three days with a promise to take Rasputin to heaven. But strange things occur. Calder has violated his vows as a Fetch, and in doing so, causes a major rupture among the Lost Souls. Calder discovers that the “nanny” he fell in love with years ago is actually the Tsarina Alexandra, wife to Nicholas II. Calder gifts two of the Romanov children immortality after the brutal execution of the Romanov family and th e Russian Revolution. To try and heal the mayhem among the Lost Souls, Calder, along with Anastasia (Ana) and Alexei (Alexis in the story) travel around the world in search of his lost key to the Death Door that allows the souls to enter heaven. Up until this point the story moves quickly but begins to drag and is a bit confusing as Calder and the Romanov children travel the world. Whitcomb’s rich descriptions of the imagined afterlife are remarkable. This book is challenging and will lead readers to interesting discussions on the Romanovs and the afterlife. Starred in Bookist. Recommended in Kirkus, Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal.

P.S. An adorable, comfortingly told story of Papa coming home in the evening and sharing the end of day rituals with his son. David McPhail's illustrations strike the perfect note for this book. The rhyming is sweet and soft, "The stars will shine, the moon will splash its light across the lawn. We'll put on our pajamas. I'll be the first to yawn". I highly recommend this book for pre-school to early elementary school aged children and think it would be a charming way to end a child's day.

Preschool –Elementary
Thomas Docherty’s book, To The Beach, is an inspiration to imagine. A small boy looking out on a rainy day decides he is going to the beach. He has his goggles, flippers snorkel, and tube. All he needs is a plane, a sailboat, a truck, some sand, the ocean and a friendly camel, of course. The book was cute, if somewhat simplistic. The pictures are terrific, the text practically nonexistent, but the imagination is a powerful thing and the only question left is, “Where to next?”

Pre-school – Elementary
Eileen Spinelli has written a lovely little tale about keeping the peace. Miss Fox’s is sick of the bickering in her class and comes up with the concept of Peace Week, no quarreling, be nice to each other and help others. Her class is surprised how easy it turns out to be and how great the returns are as all the children make an effort to get along. Even though the final line is, “Let’s make every week Peace Week!”, Spinelli gets her message across without being too preachy. Children will enjoy reading about the common things that cause arguments and ways of settling them. The book can be used as a jumping off point for discussions on peaceful living. The illustrations are bright, cheerful with wonderfully expressive faces on the animal characters.

M.S. H.S.
Jesse is a teen without a nation. Found as a newborn on an abandoned ship at sea, he is raised by an assortment of foster families until he ends up in the sleepy college town of Longview, Iowa. His college-professor foster parents are good to him, and while he tries to lie-low (to stay off of Homeland Security’s radar...he’s a being watched as a possible terrorist), he begins to settle in to his new life. Honor Clarke, however, comes to town (from Indonesia) and literally all hell breaks loose. The two of them find themselves in the middle of a war between the forces of light and darkness of Balinese mythology, and Jesse learns what his true purpose is. He is forced to reexamine what he believes to be real, and make choices that put himself, his beliefs, and his new-found family, at peril.
In spite of the demonic antagonist(s), eastern mysticism, magic and mythological characters, the story gives a strong nod to Christianity, and people of faith are represented without being caricatures. The mix of “main-line” American-style protestant Christianity with the exotic elements from Bali make for an interesting and unexpected setting, giving the work a nice tension.
The book moves along well for the most part, but goes completely berserk at the end. Certainly, “all hell breaking loose” would be expected to take on that characteristic, but as a piece of writing, The Demon Queen’s ending seems both rushed and too implausible, given the overall pace and tone of the book. Too much remains unexplained for the reader to follow along with Jesse’s fulfillment of his destiny, and while some elements are nicely balanced and developed, those strengths make the more random-feeling events seem more, well, random. We were warned...we wouldn’t want to be around for the demon queen’s arrival on this world; but more distressing, the story was perhaps subjected to a bit too-severe editing for length in a final draft. km

M.S. H.S.
Yolanda is the young daughter of an Occitanian count during the turbulent days of the Thirteenth-century inquisition in a region being eyed by the king of France. While trying to decide where her heart truly lies, young Yolanda is forced to choose between her childhood friend Raimon, for whom feelings of love are emerging, and the dashing French Knight, Sir Hugh. Subject to the manipulations of an ambitious brother who is willing to sacrifice his neighbors who are of the incorrect religious sect, Yolanda tries to make the best of a bad situation. The sudden reappearance of the Blue Flame, a symbol of unity for the Occitanain people, stirs hope...and fear...among the stakeholders in this first of the Perfect Fire Trilogy.
There were several anachronisms (characters’ motivations, especially) that proved distracting, and the “magic” elements of the Blue Flame were hardly compelling. While some of the characters were interesting (Sir Hugh, for example), others seemed too cliché or one-dimensional (the White Wolf, for one). While this book received a starred review by another reviewer, I felt it was “so-so,” especially compared to K. M. Grant’s other trilogy (The Blood Red Horse).

Caleb, the protagonist, is a high-school slacker and, worse than that, has been blamed for anything and everything that goes wrong at Screech Neck High School (including collapsing the school’s gym). Enticed by his girlfriend to join a school club focused on fulfilling your wishes, Caleb learns the hard way that wanting something does not make it so. But the most interesting and relevant lesson is about how following the crowd can lead you to destruction, while doing the right think may leave you standing alone. In the end, doing what you feel is right is the only course, however. This graphic-novel style illustrated book probably would have more fans from a graphic-novel devotee (one of whom I’m not). The illustrations demonstrate obvious talent, but were unappealing and grotesque in many cases (which is probably the desired effect, however). There is also a strong “Disney” family resemblance to the appearance characters (it is a Disney publication). The story is rambling and erratic, but it is based on Alice and Wonderland, so this also should be expected. However, the graphic novel format presents the story directly, with less room for interpretation, imagination, or speculation about underlying meaning (as was required with the “original” Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll). This is not a necessary purchase for most libraries, but will find a following among die-hard Alice in Wonderland fans or collectors. km

Sara is the fifteen-year-old daughter of a Carthaginian senator and trader, who has not only lost her mother, but who recently found out that her brother was killed in battle during the Punic War. Before Sara and her father have time to absorb the news of his death, they must flee their home on a trading vessel called the Heron, because Carthage is being invaded by the Romans. Their escape to safety tries all of Sara’s intelligence and stubbornness, and shows the plight of women during this period in history. She must put her fate into the hands of men who are in control, but are they? Sara uses her intuition and guile to manipulate those in charge to handle sticky situations and save herself and those in her care. There is a map and a glossary of nautical terms to help with the understanding of the detailed sea battle scenes but even with these it was a bit difficult to follow. The ending of the story was extremely abrupt and unless there is a plan for a sequel, ther e are quite a few unanswered questions.

UC Santa Barbara party girl, Tasha, has an unfortunate incident in a hot tub and decides to accept a last minute opportunity to do a semester abroad. So the southern California party girl switches places with a stereotypical nerdy Oxford girl, Emily. This sounds like a typical bubble gummy beach read but due to the intelligent writing and insight into the college experience this story is more then meets the eye. Though funny and frivolous at times with a lot of discussion of fashion and fads, both girls are more then the stereotype they portray and this encourages the reader to look beyond face value and think about some important issues, feminism, sexuality and self worth. Due to some language, drinking and drug use and sexual behavior this book may be best for your older teens.

This story opens with a tragic middle of the night fire which has taken the lives most of the Royal family leaving only five-year-old Zahira, who escapes with the help of a nurse maid to Ruan temple. Here she is raised as the daughter of the Temple Priestess and is trained as a warrior, with no knowledge of her royal background. When she turns 16, The temple is invaded, her adoptive mother is killed but not before she tells Zira about her birthrite as Zahira. Zira/Zahira, speaks to her God and her past is revealed to her. She now realizes her destiny is to save her people from the evil King who is now ruling her country. She gathers her people and they secretly travel to Mesgao, where a Sedorne Lord, Sorin, who owes Zira his life, rules. The two form an allience, and a romance, and they work together to reunite there people and overthrow the evil ruler King Abheron. This is an interesting fantasy with plenty of twists and turns. The characters especially Zira and the evil Abheron are well defined. I found that Sorin is a bit flat which makes the match between he and Zira seem a bit of a stretch.

E.S./M.S. Booklist, Horn Book, Kirkus, Publisher's Weekly, School Library Journal all liked this collective biography and felt it was highly entertaining and would engage kids in critical thinking about known facts and theories about royalty. Henry VIII of England and his famous daughter Elizabeth I get a disportionate amount of coverage, 30 pages out of the total 64, but the author's caricature of old formal oil paintings, broadsides, and her inventive use of sidebars does make this book a good choice for potential booktalkss. The line up of men in history to show that Napoleon was not all that short for the era in which he lived is terrific, and Mary Queen of Scot trying to grab Elizabeth's crown on the book's cover will draw in the reluctant student of history. Teachers will especailly like the last double page spread for it tells how to do historical research.
A solid purchase for school and public libraries as the author will pique the brains of even the most bored of students with some of the facts and mysteries that she brings to light.

E.S. Sandra Markle does a first-rate job of introducing the early elementary grade child to pandas and also manages to slip in a simple counting lesson. Basing her book primarily on the pandas raised at the Wolong Center in China, Markle's pictures and simple text accurately describe the young panda, his needs and growth, from birth to the age when he/she is ready to leave the mother panda. This is a good introduction to an endangered specie, and includes websites, a glossary/index, and additional information on the panda and on the Wolong Center which was hit by the earthquake of May, 2008. Some children will be upset when Markle tells that if panda twins are born in the wild, one of them will not survive. Typical of Markle, the photos of newborn pandas are graphic. Nice purchase, though, for school and public libraries.

E.S. Kirkus(4/1/09) and SLj(5/25/09) both liked this retooled version of Moss' 2003 and 2004 Max's Logbook, and I do as well. As SLJ's reviewer stated "Moss is a master at verbalizing kids' anxieties and channeling their astute observations." Through cartoons, describing science experiments and recounting the exploits of a green pencil-top eraser, Max comes to terms with his parents' separation. Again, quoting the SLJ review, Moss' use of raw emotion leavened by humor" makes this an excellent addition to school and public libraries for students in grades 3 and up. The graphic novel type end papers and Moss' use of cartoon-like illustrations and side bars are just delightful. The illustrations of what happenes when you microwave a marshmallow are as yummy as a marshmallow itself.

E.S. School Library Journal, 6/1/09, liked the humor in this 112 page book and its pen and ink comical illustrations, feeling that Nana(Grandma), grandchildren Eufala and Bog will delight readers. I agree more with Kirkus Reviews, 3/15/09, that felt this easy reader chapter book is bogged down by wordy narration, cute asides, affectless characters, and a senseless plot. Eufala and Bog's Nana tries out parttime jobs as a backhoe operator, circus performer, and now is hired on the spot by the Crispy County Police Department as a detective on the trail of a candy thief. Eufala and Bog's mother is portrayed as a total Type A who has no idea that her children and mother are out of control. Some children will read this book and love it for its characters act out their own wildest dreams. Other more perceptive children, will wonder where a grandmother gets energy enough to scuba dive and operate a forklift. An additional purchase where children l ove nonsense.

E.S. Kirkus, Book List and SLJ reviewed. CIP: Text explains how putting letters into words, words into sentences and then into paragraphs and chapters ends up creating a book. This title doesn't live up to the explaination of the purpose. It didn't support the lesson that it was intended for. However, the illustrations are great for use with a construction unit and since there is very little text, that works. An additional purchase at best.

CIP: Tells the story of Wangari Maathai, a Nobel Prize-winning environmentalist who, shocked to see entire forests being cut down in her native country of Kenya, decides to take action, beginning with the planting of nine seedlings in her own backyard. This is a nice story but not really a biography. There is a one page author's note about Maathai. It reads aloud well for African history. A good purchase for most libraries

E.S. CIP This book tells the story of the job of firefighters from the time the alarm rings until the "all clear" and return. The illustrations are the highlight of this book. E.S. Kirkus starred. Library Media Connection, PW and SLJ all gave positive comments. CIP: An illustrated biography of Annette Kellerman, an early feminist who overcame a childhood illness to become internationally recognized for her swimming, invention of water ballet and introduction of the modern swimsuit for women. Includes an appended biography including a picture. This book has just enough information to get a report started and hold the reader's interest. The illustrations are bold and bright. Good for women's history month reports and while she is not a nationally known figure her biography will interest older students. Recommended for most libraries.

E.S. Kirkus starred. SLJ and BCCB reviewed positively. CIP: Carpenter Harlan Burch, who builds everything from cradle to casket, plants two trees for every one he cuts down, and when he is very old his sap begins to rise, he grows young again, and starts a family that still lives all over the mountains. This is a cross between and ecological folktale and a family quilt history. This is a great story for studying Earth Day or Arbor day. It reads well aloud. Recommended for most libraries.

E.S. Kirkus and School Library Journal have given this a positive review. CIP: When the Mahoney family hires Henry the Critter Sitter to watch their dog, cat, bird, fish, frog, and snake, he thinks he is up for the challenge since creature control is his game, but the pets have a different idea. The pets challenge him and the family rewards Henry with $35 clearly shown in the picture and they tell him they will be going away for three weeks and will call him. This title is a fun read aloud and drew in a story time with a third grade. The humor is for older students not the younger set. Recommended for public and school libraries where summer job seeking children will get a feel for what real work is like.

This is a super hero for the young set in Captain Kapow but youngsters will identify with the Baron. This could easily be used as an alternate point of view lesson, with the view from bad guy. ES In an Author's Note, Jim Aylesworth explains that "Old Abe Lincoln Came Out of the Wilderness" was a popular song to the tune of "The Old Gray Mare" during Lincoln's campaign for the Presidency. He has adapted the song to present a simple biography of our 16th president for younger readers. In the first double spread, the scene shows young children in their school auditorium excitedly preparing to give a musical performance about Abraham Lincoln. It begins, " Babe Abe Lincoln was born in the wilderness / Born in the wilderness/ Born in the wilderness/Babe Abe Lincoln was born in the wilderness/ Many long years ago". A few verses, "Sad Abe Lincoln spoke grand words at Gettysburg/ Many lost souls ago" might limit the audience but teachers of the younger grades will be selecting and singing the verses appropriate for their grade level.

This is the snow that brings you peace."She goes on to describe other snowfalls from "the fat, cheerful flakes" that send you home early from school to the light snow falling "just enough to make you notice the delicate limbs of tree...a sparrow's small feet." The book opens with information about the H G Wells radio play War of the Worlds, explaining how many people were terrified. Going on it traces people’s fascination & the history around Mars’ early days of discover and some theories of life and water on Mars. An entire chapter is devoted to a discussion about where or not there is/was water on the planet. There follows information about “Launches and Landings” to Mars for scientific fact gathering i.e. satellites, Spirit and Opportunity landers (these 2 have surpassed expectations. The final chapter offers thoughts about Mars and the future it holds for humans. Appended are an afterword, glossary, author’s note and bibliography, other books, web sites, and index. The photos are well worth the price for the entire book. This book should be in most libraries – students need to be cognizant of Mars as a future location for people to live. Highly Recommended

This was good balanced book of helpful information usable for research. All the main research areas are covered with a lot of regional history. Efforts are made, successfully, to explain some of the conflict and problems in the country. Recovery is being made in cities with the help of families. The photos are very good and support the text well. A page of statistics, resources, web sites, museums, glossary, and index are appended. This reviewer agrees with Kirkus in the case of this book. I had to go back and start to read the beginning again, as the story was rather confusing to follow when I picked it up again. There is humor but some of it comes a cost. At the start of the story we find that the family “gave away” an older brother because the parents didn’t want a child then ?????? Where did this come from in a kids book??? He later shows up as an upset character with problems – duh. There is a lot of repetition that is boring and just plain stupid. The B&W illustrations are ok but…. Marginally Additional

This is a cute story about a little girl who is being pushed on a swing b her father and asks that he push her higher and higher. Each time she goes higher you get a different view- the tope of the park, up in the clouds, and even up into space where she sees and alien child. The simple text and vivid pictures will allow children to easily relate to how they imagine going up so high when being pushed on a swing at the playground.

PS-ES-
A little girl wakes in the night to hear a variety of sounds coming from the kitchen, so she wakes up her brother to go downstairs and together they find out the noises are their parents cleaning up the kitchen but dancing and singing as they do so. Soon after the children have crept downstairs, their mother discovers that they are awake and the children join in the fun. But before too long, everyone grows tired and it is once again, time for bed. This is a great book that touches on a couple of things. The first is what many children wonder, “What do Mom & Dad do after I go to bed?” And the other is the depiction of family fun.
