E.S. As the title implies Finn is having a temper tantrum. The cover shows a picture of a boy frowning with his blanket wrapped around him. Above his head are black scribbles. He is having a fit over a peach. He doesn’t like them today. The story continues as the tantrum escalates to thunder in the nursery and lightning in the kitchen. An earthquake even shakes the world. Finally all that commotion dies down. Finn is exhausted, hugs his mom and wants to eat the peaches. Any parent will remember being in this situation and feel the same “pain “that the parents in this book are feeling. They will also fondly recall the tantrum of a two year old when compared to their teenager. Children listening will laugh at the exaggerated illustrations. They won’t believe they ever acted like Finn during a fit!

E.S. This is a story of change in the family. It tells of how westward moving pioneers had to give up family ties in order to make a better life or participate in that great adventure. Lydia the main character does not want to move to Oregon without her grandmother and is finding it difficult to deal with the thought of losing her. Grandma is a wise woman and helps her find a way to accept the change. She lets her cry and writes down her stories in a journal for Lydia to take with her. The story brings a tear to your eye when grandma sends Lydia kisses on the wind as she embarks on her journey west. The reader knows they will never see each other again. Even though the setting is of long ago so much of what happens here can be applied to any change a family might be experiencing.

E.S. Stretch is the third book after Wiggle and Bounce by Doreen Cronin all starring the same playful beagle. The book depicts many ways to stretch and definintly teaches the meaning of the word by the end of the story. The rhyming text and colorful illustrations where even the words stretch will delight the audience or reader. Reviewed in Booklist, Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal it will make the reader want to get up and stretch along with the dog.

A great explanation of how an aircraft carrier works. Every page gives an explanation of terms used (pulling Gs, Zoombag, etc) and any child who is interested in planes, aircraft carriers and the like. The illustrations are simple and a nice complement to the story. I would recommend this book for young readers.

Preschool and Elementary
Jamie Harper’s book, Miss Mingo and the Fire Drill, is a terrific tale. Miss Mingo and her very diverse class of animals are learning about fire safety. The group cover’s smoke detectors, firefighters gear, and Stop, Drop and Roll. Every different animal in the class has a fear of fire and a different way of dealing with it. Harper includes an aside in small print, telling the reader of each animal’s specific defense mechanism for coping with fear.
I found the book both informative and amusing. The watercolor and ink drawings perfectly compliment the text. This is a wonderful book for teachers preparing their classes for fire drills or just discussing fire safety week.

P.S. The mice are having a harvest party in the garden and everyone is invited, except for the scary cat. Using vegetables, flowers and nuts, the clever mice devise a plan to scare the cat away. When the cat comes near, all the animals join together and use their art to make them look like a single, threatening animal, effectively frightening away the intruder. Ehlert’s use of paper, fruit, seeds, and string make the collages pop off the page. Endnotes offer a discussion about pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns and directions for roasting pumpkin seeds, as well as a spread showing off autumn plants and vegetables.

E.S. Book notes include this succinct description of the story: When Jouha counts the ten donkeys carrying his dates to market, he repeatedly forgets to count the one he is riding on, causing him great consternation. Includes numbers written out in Arabic and in English transliteration, as well as the numerals one through ten, and a note on the origins and other versions of the story.
Bright illustrations depict the sunny desert setting. An initial note explains that, as in Arabic, the numbers appear from right to left, and provides source notes and pronunciations.

E.S. Mouse may have won Bear's friendship in their picture book debut, A Visitor for Bear, but bear is setting another challenge for mouse in this early reader entry. Grumpy old Bear is totally uninterested in celebrating his birthday, but his cheery friend Mouse doggedly dons several comical disguises to trick and cajole him into enjoying his birthday. Four short chapter with full-color ink and watercolor illustrations and a funny climax makes this story work equally well for young independent readers or as a read-aloud for younger children.
