E.S. BCCB Starred, Kirkus starred, Library Media starred. CIP: When two children plant mysterious seeds, a strange flowering vine grows, out of which a big white bear appears, and the hat he wears allows him to perform magical feats, blow bubbles in incredible shapes and change flowers into sea creatures. This wordless picture book allows everyone to tell the tale as they see it. It can be a beautiful folktale or a quiet bed time story. It can be used for picture prompts in the classroom. The white bear is surrounded with bold orange, mustard yellow and a nice medium blue, so that the illustrations are easy to describe by even the smallest reader. As the book progresses the illustrations become busier and the tale more complex. This is a good purchase for school libraries and can be used in the public library.

E.S. BCCB Starred, Kirkus starred, Library Media starred. In Steel Town (an American way of life that is fading fast) the freight trains come and go, the big furnace roars and the steel mill never sleeps. Widener has illustrated this tale with dark insets pictures of a steel town, how the mill operates, and the people who live this way of life. There is a lot of white space on the page to make it easy to read this riveting story aloud. This is a good title for career day, history units and just reading to older students to explain an industry. This is a good solid purchase for all school libraries and some public libraries

E.S. Publisher's Weekly starred. Although he enjoys some aspects of his retirement, 8 year old Brian gains a new perspective on his job of being a child after spending time in Florida's Happy Sunset Retirement Community. Agee's classic illustrations are pen and ink with soft color fill. If a child has to go visit grandparents in a Florida community this book is for them. This has grandparent appeal to read to children. The story, however, doesn't suspend a younger reader's believe enough to follow along. My readers just didn't get it, but the teachers laughed out aloud. While Brian is doing a variety activities the student found unusual (most didn't have grandmothers who knit); the teachers were longing for a time when they could scrapbook and swing dance! This has cross generational appeal for the right audience.

E.S. BCCB starred. Each member of a first grade class, as well as the teacher, principal, and a bus driver, expresses excitement, worry or hope as the first day of first grade begins. This is a good title for the first day of school to discuss expectations and a good read for the last day of Kindergarten for the same. Each two page spread is a poem that explains the position of the person who is illustrated. Rankin has animals playing the parts and the pen and ink illustrations are highlighted in soft tones. The alphabetical list of names has a multicultural appeal. A good purchase for school libraries, other libraries as needed.

E.S. Susan Jeffers has done a great job on the story of the Chincoteague ponies. She includes a map of the outer islands where the ponies live. She offers a nice story of a young girl who wants a pony, does her research, saves her money, gets help from strangers and in the end gets the pony of her dreams. Jeffers knows how to illustrate the horses to make them come alive in the water and on the page. There is plenty of reader appeal if horse loving girls are your readers. Recommended for most libraries.

E.S. Booklist starred, School Library Journal starred. The illustrations in this title are classic Graham. When Will finds a bird with a broken wing, he takes it home and cares for it, hoping in time it will be able to return to the sky. I totally disagree with the starred reviews of this title. The story of saving a bird with a hurt wing is nice but not realistic. Most birds who are hurt die in captivity. In New Jersey the chances of transmitting West Nile virus are high. This is an activity that should be reserved for professional. Read the title for yourself and decide if it is appropriate for your library.

E.S. Recommended Illustrations and simple text describe the first year in the life of a foal. This is the perfect book for every horse lover reader from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The illustrations draw in the reader and they are instantly hooked on the story of this horse. As the foal grows, the girl who is with her delights in the changes and when it is time to bridle the horse the reader knows they have formed a life long bond. The two illustrations of the girl with her riding helmet make this a perfect title to add to any collection.

E.S. This is a traditional retelling of the classic tale. The story is overly long for younger readers. The witch transformed is a very startling illustration also not for young readers. The illustrations do highlight the story with much appeal for older readers. The perfect family portrait at the beginning and the end sends the wrong message this tale is supposed to portray. This is a fine purchase for large folktale collections, but not necessary for everyone.

E.S. This is a simple retelling without much to recommend it. The illustrations are nice. The story has Dad offering good will in the end which confuses the whole step-mother image. The sisters are appropriately funny and horrid. The full page illustrations move the story along, but the ever after falls flat in the end. However, there is much child appeal as the third graders who read it loved the look of the story. So, that makes this an additional purchase for large folktale collections.

E.S. Booklist starred, Kirkus starred, School Library Journal starred. Recommended When the knights of the castle are awakened by the sound of the Madcap Monster Ball, they decide to join in the party. Siegel illustrates a fun tale with dark colors, humorous monsters, and one very scared knight. There is a lot of white space that allows the words to fly around the page. This title has lots of child appeal for a scary tale that is not necessarily about Halloween. A good fun read with a tapping beat perfect for story time or bed time. A must purchase for most libraries.

P.S. E.S. Booklist starred. Recommended The town soccer team wants Biggie Bear to play for their team. Once Biggie is on the field he realizes there is more to playing soccer than being big. While Biggie has his own interest in stamp collecting and jazz the team realizes they can all be friends but not everyone is cut out to play on the team. This is good bibliotherapy for children who don't want to play soccer but feel they must. It highlights individual pursuits but allows children to see there are other fun activities to share from peanut butter and banana sandwiches to jazz. The illustrations are a little flat but the characters have kid appeal. A good purchase for most libraries, especially libraries in towns with big soccer franchises.

Troll-son, whose family has only one eye amongst the three of them runs away to avoid being sent to the "Betterer "who tries to make trolls more human, thus better. He hides under Samuel Blink's bed. (Samuel is his hero from a previous adventure) Samuel's family keeps the secret of the troll, as well as what has happened to his Uncle (turned into a dog) and the destruction of the wicked witch so that the hidden forest is now a safe place to visit. Magnus Miklebust wants to turn the forest into a theme park with real live trolls and pixies as slaves. Samuel, his sister, and the troll all work together to thwart this evil. A rollicking adventure which does not depend on its prequel, and which still leaves possible another adventure. Buy the first also.

As the book states, NASCAR has its own language which fans should familiarize themselves with in order to understand everything that's happening on the track and in the garage area. This book does a nice job of clearly explaining what all that race jargon means. The text is fun and engaging, not just dry definitions. Photographs of some of the most popular race drivers can be found throughout the book. If you have race fans in your library population, this book is a great choice.

E.S. This book does a wonderful job of showing the delicate balance of nature and how everything is connected. It starts out describing the impact the eradication of wolves had on YellowstoneNational Park. It details the effect the disappearance of the wolves had on the other wildlife and vegetation in the park. It then goes on to describe the recovery of the wildlife, once the wolf was reintroduced to the park. The text is presented on two different levels to expand the audience of the book. This memoir of internationally renowned ballet dancer, Li Cunxin, is a moving story of life in China during the Cultural Revolution. Li was born in 1961 on the brink of starvation. When Madame Mao was trying to revive the Peking Dance Academy, she sent staff into the countryside to find dance students. At age 11, Li is selected for the school and catapulted into the world of ballet and its rigorous training. His success leads him to a cultural exchange with the Houston ballet that eventually leads to his defection in 1978. Black and white photographs are included.

The story is riveting, but the delivery is dry. Some background knowledge of the Cultural Revolution is needed to fully understand Li’s life in
China.

P Horn Book (Fall 08) “engaging reading…”
P Kirkus Review (5/1/08) “exciting classroom or family activities…”
P Library Media Connection (8/08) “engaging set… thoroughly enjoy… recommended…”
P School Library Journal (7/1/08) “inspired by a theater-improv game… engaging choice for literature and acting classes…”

Performance rights are stated in the very start of the book and are “without limitation.” If a school wishes to perform any of these of these plays, they must get prior written permission (the agent addresses are provided). In the introduction the editor explains that each author as a Newbery award winner, was asked to write a play. Each was to pick a word and these six words had to be included in their plays. Many of the plays are humorous and the characters are school age. The plays are written in script form and include a character list at the start and production notes at the end of each. There is also a short introduction by the authors to “set the stage” for the play. This reviewer was not terribly impressed by this volume. Although the authors are impressive for their prior works, the plays are either too short to be engaging OR the concept of the play is either not interesting or pointless. This could just be a collection of short stories. But I can’t see going to all the trouble of getting permission to perform these as they are very brief. Perhaps a lesson about script writing could be generated from this book but otherwise it is an additional purchase only as needed.

However, some in the school are not accepting of the "living impaired" as others. Phoebe has decided to learn more about this strange happening because she likes Tommy who is one of the "living impaired". Things stir when one of the zombies decides to try out for the football team. Tensions rise when one of Phoebe’s friends, Adam, comes to defend the zombies from those in the school that want them gone. Adams is also caught between the facts that he now realizes he has feelings for his friend Phoebe while she is infatuated with Tommy. Teen will find much of the typical high school drama in this story. It very well could be a book boys would pick up and read simply because of the zombie aspect, however, the cover will assure that the boys will stay away from a story they may enjoy.

Ellwand enters the house and discovers a locked chest which he manages to drag and then drive to his home where he then proceeds to pry the lock off. Inside are journals, photographs, recordings and other belongings of 19th century photographer Isaac Wilde. The story switches to the year 1889 with Wilde's recordings where he talks about the mysterious world of "pixies" whom he snapped a picture of and hides inside a "vanisher" (a daguerreotype case). The vanisher is among Wilde's possessions found by Ellwand who decides to open it and says, "Once you've looked through the vanisher, it's never the same". Beautiful photographs throughout this book complement the text perfectly and will capture the reader’s attention.

M.S. - Austin, an avid go-kart racer is the new kid in the neighborhood. He had to leave his go-kart in Virginia when his family moved, so he must rent one when going to the track. Austin blames the rental go-kart for his losing the races he has competed in so far. Soon he meets some of the other racers, Nicole and Ryan who wins practically all the races he is in. It turns out Ryan goes to go-kart school for lessons, which Austin thinks is silly. Eventually Austin joins the same racing team that Ryan is on and sets out to prove that he is the better racer of the two. But it is Austin who learns that it is teamwork that matters the most, not who wins or has the best looking go-kart. Each of the 10 chapters is complemented by a black and white illustration which brings the text to life. The book also contains a glossary, a section with go-kart information, discussion and writing prompts for curriculum support. Boys, especially those who are reluctant readers and enjoy sports will find this book appealing.

H.S. - This is the first novel by Tanya Landman, a children's author in England to appear in the U.S. In this historical fiction story, 14-year old Siki witnesses the violent murder of her little brother and other members of her Apache tribe by Mexican raiders. She makes a vow to avenge her brother's murder, works hard training for and becomes a woman warrior. Siki rides with the other warriors in Apache tribe and alongside her mentor Golahka, fighting the Mexicans and the "White Eyes" as they try to save their land and customs from destruction. This story's setting, language, plot, and characters are all very believable. Included are historical notes and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

[General reading level: E.S.]

This is what I’d call an “enhanced” comic book for young readers. The story is about a nerdy, bullied school boy who goes home and builds a giant robot. His plan is to intimidate his bullies, but he ends up saving a runaway train while he’s at it. The story is predictable, adheres to “superhero” stereotypes, and doesn’t bother the reader with details or plausible action. But this just adds to its charm. By “charm” I mean the kind of charm that will appeal to young boys...the very kind of boys who will pick this book off of the shelf. There’s plenty of action for fans of slapstick and grossness (vomit is mentioned several times...) and the book is short enough that even reluctant comic book readers won’t be overwhelmed. The illustrations are typical comic-book with lots of flash and color. Complete with a glossary (including words such as noogie), a discussion guide aimed at dealing with bullies, and a history of the comic book genre, this book will probably find a useful, place in school classrooms or libraries. Because the copy I have is “library bound,” it will be more durable than typical comics, making it a better purchase for schools or libraries interested in having graphic novels/comics in their juvenile collections. While having a rather narrow target audience, I’m sure Zinc Alloy (and other titles in the series) will get plenty of handling among the target audience. For most community public libraries, however, this may be considered an “additional purchase.”

P.S. A 5th grade boy read the book at my request. His opinion was that it was definitely for younger children, and that there wasn’t enough action to keep an older child interested. He liked the drawings, and in summary called it “a fun picture book for little kids.”

In both the beginning and ending of the book Pirates, the author sets the record straight:” Many books, movies and plays make pirates seem like heroes. Real pirates were never heroes." and a pirate's life was not glamorous. There were sordid living conditions, diseases, filthy water and frequent fights amongst the crew.
In between these two short sections, there are 20 poems about the various aspects of a pirate's life such as Making Ready, Ship's Rules and Fog Attack. Cat-O-Nine Tails is about being flogged for breaking a ship's rule. The refrain "Unh!" along with the picture depicting a young lad being whipped drives home the cruelty of the punishment dispensed. Each double spread page has a poem and full page illustration. The paintings by Dan Burr are wonderful. However, in this reviewer's opinion, this book is intended for an older audience than the intended population.

Ugly duckling Anaid wakes one morning after having her sleep disturbed by howling wolves to find that her vain and childish mother has vanished. As she urges her mother's friends and aunt to help look for her, Anaid learns that her mother is the Chosen One, with a pivotal role to play in the eternal battle between their own sisterhood, the Omars, and their rivals, the Odish, who drink the blood of young Omar girls to stay eternally young. As time passes, Anaid's appearance changes -- she becomes beautiful, and she develops powers no one realized she would have. The newly strong witch is trained by each animal clan of the Omars in their unique talent, and soon realizes that she is the only person who will be able to save her mother before she turns on her clan to become one of the Odish. War of the Witches is exciting, and interesting magical abilities abound, but some of the plot points will be obvious to savvy fantasy readers. The dialog is occasionally stilted (perhaps something was lost in translation) and the angst is a bit heavy handed, but War of the Witches will be an overall solid addition to larger fantasy collections.

When Australian farm-boy Ozzie leaves the outback to play football in a sports-crazed Texas town, he's taken aback by the American "winning is everything" attitude and the townspeople's eagerness to sell each other out. Ozzie changes the team's losing fortunes by teaching them to play Rugby League style and helping them to defeat their rival team. This book is almost pure sports, with a smattering of pale romance (warning: the female characters are marginalized sex objects) and a dash of nasty small town politics that could easily have been left out. Ozzie's confidence and "whatever mate" attitude give him an easy coolness teen boys would do well to emulate, however, the emotional scenes are poorly handled, and tension never truly builds -- even during the games that should be nail-biters. A decent, but flawed book that will have takers among male sports fans. Adults should be warned that Ozzie and his friends drink A LOT, and Ozzie's loving description of beer is the only time his feelings ring true.

The second in a Johnny Quest-ish techno-mystery series, this British import is strong enough to stand on its own with very little confusion. When Italian heiress Cristina contacts the teen scientists/investigators of STORM (Science and Technology to Over-Rule Misery) to help her recover a family heirloom stolen by a "ghost" they find themselves infiltrating a Venetian palace and encountering their arch-rival Caspian who is trying to wreck havoc on an international intelligence convention. Fast-paced and fun with oodles of nifty gadgets, this is the perfect pre-Alex Rider series.

H.S.

Planet Pregnancy is a slight, clichéd, novel in (very bad) verse that often feels as though it is a short story vertically expanded to fill space on a page. When sixteen year old Sahara finds out she is pregnant, she hides it from everyone except her best friend and does her best to ignore it herself. When she finally does tell her mother she's expecting, Sahara invents a rape story so it won't be her fault. When Sahara eventually tells her mother the truth, Mom goes on a shopping and tanning spree, and essentially ignores her daughter, which leaves Sahara's situation feeling like an afterthought. Like most new mothers, Sahara is in love with her new baby at the book's end, which floats off into the land of happily-ever-after, giving and inappropriate picture of teen motherhood. Planet Pregnancy had excellent potential, but needed more story and some decent writing. Novels in verse are popular right now, but no one will want to read: I'm saving / my waitressing /paychecks / for a Lexus. / But sex / is big / in Texas. / What if / I never / get my Lexus?

Locke is a high school junior who loses control when he gets angry. He calls this evil “the venom” which takes him over and forces him to do extremely violent acts. He meets a beautiful, messed-up goth girl, Renee, and falls in love. After one violent outburst threatens her and his best friend, Locke sets out to rid himself of this fantasy darker half. The author plays out this internal struggle as an actual battle between Locke’s superhero alter ego and the evil venom. Full page, comic-style illustrations accompany these episodes. The book is described as a “fast-paced, funny, and furious ride through the New York City teenage underground” and I believe the teens will read it and find it fascinating. However, be warned that it is definitely for older high school students as there is graphic sex and gritty language.

[General Reading Level: H.S.]

Last in the Heir Trilogy, following The Warrior Heir and The Wizard Heir, The Dragon Heir follows a loose group of young magical people in their effort to remain free and neutral while around them wages a “cold war” between the house of the Roses and a powerful wizard. At the heart of the matter is a certain covenant, which, in the wrong hands could tip the balance of power. The missing Dragon Stone is key to the inauguration of the new status quo, and it takes an all-out war to resolve the situation. While trying to protect their sanctuary of Trinity, the magical folk face unknown forces, betrayal, and difficult decisions. In the end, the good prevail, but not without tragic losses, and the help of a heroine who never wanted the job in the first place.

Teens who enjoy the current crop of mythic/fantasy fiction will also like Chima’s work. The characters are multi-faceted with believable personalities and motives, and the magical world in which the characters dwell makes sense in its own way. The reader will empathize with the various characters, even the dark ones, and discover that good and bad in this magical world (and thus any other) are not always what they seem.

Recommend if the first two books are also in collection, and if your library has a strong fantasy YA demand, recommend obtaining the other two titles.

[General Reading Level: M.S.]

Second in a series (Kingdom Keepers), this story is about a group of teen hosts in Disney’s MagicKingdom in Florida. The protagonists have been duplicated as holographic hosts (commonly called Kingdom Keepers) and are used to showcase Disney Imagineering technology and enhance the guests’ experience in the park. However, the technology is hijacked by evil Disney characters who become real, and threaten the balance of power in the Kingdom that “Uncle Walt” had managed to control. The Kingdom Keeper team has little time to save the situation, all while regular park guests go about their lovely day in the Animal and Magic Kingdoms.

Older elementary and younger middle school audiences will most enjoy this fantasy, especially those familiar with the Disney characters and parks. The action moves along well, and though it takes a little reading to understand the setting (this is a second book in a series), the mix of fantasy and reality will please children who enjoy the Disney universe. Older readers will probably find parts of the book silly or unbelievable, but may enjoy the Disney setting nonetheless.

Recommend if the first book is also in collection. If your patrons include children who particularly like Disney material, the series will be worth acquiring.

Bell’s first novel explores the family relationships which are brought to light after the death of Michael’s grandfather who had not spoken to his father in years. Their separation does not keep Michael from connecting with his grandfather, knowing his thoughts, even observing long-ago occurrences after the man dies. Each communication draws Michael closer to this connection and further from his life with his father, basketball teammates and sister. These weaken Michael to the point of a coma as his grandfather becomes more assertive. The premise of beings who cannot leave life behind without settling their affairs has long been a well-used story element. In this case Michael feels less real himself as his grandfather tries to have his final say through Michael’s body. A sound purchase

M.S. Kessler, author of the Emily Windsnap books, has a solution to the plight of a lonely 11-year-old girl whose best friend has just moved far away: Give her a fairy. In Philippa's case her fairy has an attitude which means she see the assignment as a job and one she doesn't like. Daisy has already mishandled an assignment so her attitude appears particularly cavalier. Philippa is the child of parents who embarrass her constantly by picking her up in the van they use to appear at children's parties and dressing as hippies. Daisy comes complete with three wishes and the first one goes to change Philippa's parents into normal ones. As Philippa suffers not only with her parents but the bullying girls at school, the second wish goes to make her popular. Daisy gradually ages as a flower might and her maturation leads to a reluctant friendship with her charge. All is well by the end as the last wish goes to return parents and acquaintances to normal. Fluffy and fun, definitely additional.

Part of a series dealing with Media Literacy, this volume offers ideas about evaluating and looking carefully at the news, both on TV and in print. In discussing that media influences us, the book looks at the following: its money making business, attention to audience, perspective, bias, stereotypes, rush to print/tell, censorship, sources, and attention grabbers. A timeline, glossary, Internet FactHound connection (1 to PBS for both upper and lower levels), other books, and index are included. This book, indeed many in the series will be a welcome addition to Media Center lessons and classroom curriculum involved with evaluating the present media concerns and educating students to be wise consumers of such. The book is a collection of Norman Rockwell paintings put to the words of George M Cohan 's song. The verse of the song is used 2 times so that more pictures are incorporated into the book. The pictures are interesting but they are "white" and in this reviewer's opinion not very crisp. The thumbnail pictures at the end were interesting, especially noting the years the paintings were done. The book has appeal for art teachers or a class doing work with either Rockwell or Cohan. Sometimes good ideas go wrong. That is the message delivered in the first chapter of this book, part of the “Headline Science” series. A news article from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health opens the chapter with the information that an ingredient in antibacterial hand soap persists during wastewater treatment and may eventually find its way into fertilizer used for crops. Because the chemical is toxic when ingested, studies are being conducted to determine the risk to human health. Each chapter begins in similar fashion, with an excerpt from a news article pertaining to environmental chain reactions. The book covers a lot of information from food webs to the water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles to environmental chain reactions. Photographs are used to illustrate important points and a timeline of environmental history is provided at the end of the book. For students intrigued by the topic of global warming and pollution, this book may serve to provide necessary scientific background knowledge. The resources listed in the back of the book share Web sites and books that offer additional information. Not much information is given, however, about efforts to deal with the existing problems and prevent new ones. The focus of the book is on the way we set chain reactions in motion with carelessness, ignorance, and/or accidents. This is an important topic, handled in a professional manner, and may benefit libraries that are trying to build an environmental awareness section.

Bright colorful illustrations and noise effects-BRIIIING BRIIING!!! WEE_OOO!! WEE_OOO!!- celebrate both imaginary play and firefighters in this picture book entitled The Firefighters. Please note, however, the author is from Australia, and therefore "Get Down Low and Go Go Go!" is used instead of our "Stop Drop and Roll". A good choice for fire safety week.

A teacher asked her students to write poems inspired by photographs of children around the world playing. The students created simple “word riffs.” A few are really excellent but many fall short. The photographs are beautiful and the book could be used to show how even though we grow up in different areas we are all truly the same. Recommended as an additional purchase.

E.S.
This true story was first written and published as adult autobiography; they recently published a teen version and now this picture book version. Cunxin simplifies his story to focus on how he learned to dance and how this brought him his freedom. Intertwining a fable his parents told him as a child, he tells the reader about his peasant background and explains how at age 11 he was selected by Chairman Mao’s officials to be a dancer. The reader learns about his difficult training and sees how his hard work and dedication give him the chance to become a professional dancer in America. Although the backdrop is China’s Cultural Revolution, the reader does not need to know the history to enjoy the story. This really is a about dedication, freedom and family. Soudvilas illustrated the book using traditional Chinese materials and techniques and her artwork is stunning. This is an outstanding book.

E.S. Never have head lice been so much fun. Our school nurse didn't like this book-but then, she's never been known for her sense of humor. Comic illustrations high light the fun, as nits are seen parachuting into the "picnic area". Told in rhyme, a little girl's family keeps trying different cures for her nits, everything from mayo to kerosene. Finally, the family dog arrives with a bottle of rid nit shampoo and the problem is solved. The last page shows a nit grave yard, with appropriately funny epitaphs. This book is just lousy with fun.

E.S. What a joy! The text and the illustrations in this book capture the kinetic energy of Alexander Calder. "Sandy" Calder was the son of two artists, but studied engineering in school. Later, he went to art school and one of his early jobs was for a newspaper, sketching the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. This inspired him to create his own miniature circus, which soon grew to fill five suitcases. One exuberant two page spread shows Calder stepping, suitcases in hand, from Paris to New York and back again. Everyone associates Calder with mobiles, little is written about this delightful part of the artist's life. Children and art teachers alike will love this book.

M Horn Book (Fall 08) "folksy, repetitive text... becomes grating... visually stimulating..."
M Kirkus Review %/15/08) "superficial review... will leave children pumped up but significantly under informed."

Starting in 1812 Uncle Sam leads a parade of people, some with postage stamp heads, and their state flags through American history. Each 2-page spread shows a significant event and gives a paragraph of explanation. The War of 1812, Gold Rush, Civil War, Westward Expansion, Statue of Liberty, WW I and WW II, and Civil Rights are covered. The illustrations are the best part - the stamps and faces are fun. There is not very much information at all but it might inspire kids to look further into history?????? There is an author's note about the history of the term 'Uncle Sam", and 2 pages of brief information about some famous Americans that were seen in the book. Consider this additional but very interesting for a young stamp collector.

Croc brings the rescue boat out to help. Melrose's life is saved with Croc's extra help. Returning to land, Melrose is sorry to have ruined Croc's birthday but Croc assures him that it has been a most exciting birthday and Croc is welcomed back at shore as a hero, getting flowers and a fresh fish. At the birthday celebration each realizes how special they are to each other. The illustrations soft and supportive of the text. The author has done the "Blue Kangaroo" books. She is Irish but not trouble for the story. Recommended for birthday celebrations and sharing.

P Booklist (10/15/08 - Online) nice to see at this reading level "clear, bright computer graphics with a chatty, upbeat historical account..."

I agree with the grade level comment, it is good. The computer graphics leave something to be desired but the information is well presented going through each step of the process into a "ticket to Freedom". Each 2-page spread covers one section of the process and includes "extra" information to support the segment.
Ellis Island history is covered into its present day museum and Wall of Honor. Also included are 5 more facts, glossary, books, FactHound site (3 links about Ellis Island - will need teacher/parent support as they are on an older level), and an index. The book is recommended for its level of introductory information.

Two months after injuring her knee, Amy is back for her track meets. Well, sort of. After waiting anxiously to get back, she is now worried that maybe her knee is not what it should be. She is getting twinges in it even after doing all the correct warm-ups and stretches. Afraid to tell her father, Amy goes to her sister, Natalie who has a great practice idea. First match back is not so good. More advice from Natalie sends Amy to practice with her arch rival, Madison. The two of them exchange ideas and secrets to help each other. At the meet, Amy comes in second but has her best time ever. This was a nice, encouraging story with some interesting "tips" for success. A good read for the competitive athlete, especially in these circumstances. Included are a glossary, a 2-page bio about Babe Didrikson Zaharias, discussion questions, writing prompts, and a FactHound Internet site (this gave 3 sites - 2 about sports warm-up and safety). The illustrations give support and for the rea ding level are helpful but for the grade level are not so necessary. Recommended.

M.S. An abandoned cat befriends an abused hound, who is chained underneath his evil owner's porch. Together, the unlikely pair make a family when the cat's kittens are born. Meanwhile, sinister forces are unleashed in the bayou when a thousand year old snake, known as Grandmother, is unleashed to vent her bitterness and revenge. Judy Freeman calls this one of the best of the year, but I am not so sure. The writing is lyrical, the tale is poignant, but I wonder if the audience will be confused by the many story threads that Appelt has so deftly woven. This will not be an easy sell, for the audience is limited. It is, however, a worthwhile read.

Like the other books in this humorous nonfiction series, this account of the trials and tribulations of work on the Statue of Liberty is packed with interesting details. The author takes us from the inception of the idea in France to the opening ceremony in the United States 21 years later. The cartoon-like illustrations and their corresponding captions really steal the show, filling in the details with humor and engaging the reader in the story of the statue that did not initially interest Americans. Although not a necessary purchase at this price, it would be a nice addition where books on the Statue of Liberty are needed.

According to the author’s note, Billy the Kid was as well known in his day as recording stars are today. This biography uses stories and quotes from newspaper articles to help present an unromanticed account of the short life of this young outlaw. Henry (his real name) lost his mother at about the age of 15, quit school, and soon found himself falling under the influence of the violent frontier town in which he lived. He was jailed that year for his part in a robbery and subsequently escaped, thus beginning a pattern of lawlessness that would follow him until his death at the age of 21. Originally published in 1992, this revised edition contains a suggested reading list of recently published books and related Internet addresses in addition to a glossary and index. At 44 pages, this brief biography might not satisfy the minimum page requirement for book reports set by many teachers, but it may capture the interest of older reluctant readers who have heard the legend of Billy the Kid.

M. S. 15-year-old Tamisin Warner has always known that she was different from other people, but when she suddenly sprouts wings, she realizes that she may be a little more different than she’d originally thought. A new boy, Jak, comes to her school, and she feels a natural affinity to him since he seems a little different as well. The two of them fall through a “gate” into the world of the fey, where Tamisin finds out that she is the halfling daughter of the fairy queen, and that Jak (a goblin halfling) had been sent by his goblin uncle to bring her back. Tamisin and Jak must decide whom to trust, and they must find a way to restore peace and order to the mystical world where Jak’s uncle and his ilk have long rebelled against the iron rule of Tamisin’s mother.
Tamisin seems remarkably and unrealistically calm in the emergence of her abnormalities. And some of the mythical creatures in the fantasy world are annoying, for example, a unicorn named Herbert who stalks Tamisin but then falls for Lamia Lou, a snake woman with an irritating “lithp” (lisp). An unconvincing fantasy.

E. S. “Familiarity breeds contempt” in this classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The emperor’s daughter spurns the prince’s precious gifts to her, and then kisses the swineherd (actually the prince in disguise) for some worthless toys. The emperor, seeing them kissing, turns them both out of his empire. And the prince, having gotten to know the spoiled and silly princess, firmly rejects her in the end. Careless proofreading has the princess receiving her "eighty-sixty" kiss, instead of her "eighty-sixth." The illustrations are whimsical and folksy. A nice package, though not a necessary purchase.

E. S. “Terrell is getting a pet guinea pig!” This book follows Terrell through the processes of selecting his new pet, creating a habitat for her, and learning how to feed, handle, and care for her. The author lets readers (and their parents) know that parents will be responsible for much of the care of the guinea pig. She also recommends veterinarian checkups, as well as weekly health checkups at home. Illustrations are large and colorful, but sometimes the guinea pigs look a little odd, like an Ewok (remember Star Wars?). Or, sometimes, Terrell’s guinea pig smiles, which real guinea pigs will not do. There is one small photograph of a guinea pig; more photographs may have been useful to readers. Overall, the information is accurate, useful, and age-appropriate. E. S. Mogo, a young boar who was the runt of his litter, is more cautious and attentive than his siblings. Mogo loves spending time with his family. Therefore, it is truly distressing to him when, after his second year, his mother banishes him and his littermate brothers (as all mothers of male warthogs do), forcing them to care for themselves. In “Three Little Pigs” fashion, Mogo’s brothers make imprudent housing choices and meet with disaster. Lonely and scared, Mogo takes the time to enlarge a nice, deep aardvark burrow for shelter. He trains to increase his speed and endurance so that he will be better able to escape his predators (particularly a wild dog he has dubbed “Monster”), and Mogo meets a young baboon who teaches him how to reach out in friendship. Mogo is a winsome character who will warm readers’ hearts and make them laugh. While many of the characters in this coming-of-age adventure are endowed with human-li ke thoughts and feelings (and language), readers will learn about the actual behaviors and habits of warthogs and other animals of the African savanna, including some gory attacks. Attractive realistic illustrations enhance understanding and interest.

P. S. The Little Matador comes from a long line of bullfighters, so his parents are naturally concerned to discover that he would rather draw pictures than fight bulls. His dad rushes him immediately to the ring to challenge a gigantic bull. The Little Matador refuses to fight (comparisons to Ferdinand are inevitable), but the bull charges anyway. However, the Little Matador gets the bull to stop in its tracks and pose for him, just like all the other animals in the story had done. Then all the people want to pose for him, as well. That night, though clearly disappointed, his father decides to allow the Little Matador to draw pictures, and even poses for a portrait himself.
Hector’s richly colored illustrations evoke
Old World charm, and he manages to convey a variety of facial expressions using only a few simple dots and lines. Readers will be amused by the posing animals. The story is somewhat slight, but kids who feel that they are not living up to others’ expectations will identify with the Little Matador.

P. S. The 1984 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize extends his message of sharing, caring, forgiveness, love and acceptance to the youngest of children. Full-page illustrations show children of different races, cultures, and religions playing together, arguing and forgiving, praying, and expressing physical affection. While all young children need to learn these lessons, the focus on God in this work makes it most appropriate for religious collections and for family sharing. Also, the illustrations express much more diversity than the text. Repeatedly referring to the reader as “Dear Child of God,” using no other names for God, and mentioning no gods of other faiths throughout the text, the author appears to assume that the reader practices a monotheistic, probably Judeo-Christian, religion. This seems exclusionary, especially given the intended message. And, a warning: this is quite sweet. Recommended in Booklist (8/1/08), Kirkus (8/1 5/08) and starred in PW (7/7/08).

P. S. In a simple three-stanza rhyme, a young boy and girl run some errands while encouraging readers and other characters – people at the bus stop and the bakery, a balloon man, and a jogger, among others – to “move to the beat” with them. Specific actions are suggested, which would make this a fun book to read with a group of babies or toddlers, reinforcing a vocabulary of verbs and body parts. One-on-one sharing would also be enjoyable, as the bright, cartoon-like illustrations tell the additional story of the characters preparing for a party, and there are many details to observe throughout. This is a sturdy, attractive book that entertains on many levels.

H.S. It has been seven years since the Master and Chalice (the cup bearer of healings) took power over the Circle of advisors in Willowlands. Now that they have died, Mirasol, a beekeeper and keeper of the woods in a small area of Willowlands, is the new Chalice and the former Master’s brother has taken over his position as Master. The new Master was sent away by his brother seven years ago to become a Priest of the Fire, but he is no longer human and is unable to touch someone without burning them. Mirasol is able to hear the earthlines calling to her for help. This is not strange for her because many people from the old families hear them as well. Her job is to bind the new Master to the land while trying to heal it after the last Chalice and Master brought destruction to the land. Mirasol uses the aide of her bees, and the honey that serves as the vessel of her magic, to help bring healing to Willowlands. She is afraid that she won’t have time to save Willowlands. Together, Mirasol and the Master must save Willowlands while come to an understanding of their feelings for each other. The plot is confusing mixing in flashbacks that the reader is not sure is a flashback. The book received a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, but I found it hard to read with complicated sentences and undeveloped characters

H.S. Set in nineteenth century London, Ivy, the youngest in a family of thieves and scoundrels, learns quickly to keep to herself. On her first and only day of school, five year old Ivy is kidnapped by a group of gentle thieves. Known for her beautiful red hair, Ivy finds herself as the lure for a skinner, Carroty Kate, “a woman who literally stole the clothes off a person’s back.” A few years later she returns home as a laudanum addict. Now at fifteen, Ivy must earn her keep and help support her invalid aunt. Spotted by a Pre-Raphaelite artist, Oscar Frosdick hires Ivy to be his model for his paintings. The story goes forth at full speed with Oscar’s jealous mother trying to dispose of Ivy with strychnine, python squeezing, and locking her up with only a glass of water laced with enough laudanum to kill her. Saved by the band of gentle thieves from her early life, Ivy receives an unexpected reunion and revelation by Carroty Kate. There is much earthy humor in this Dickensian story that introduces readers to the dark side of 19th century London, Cockney accents, and class struggles. Readers will be rooting for Ivy as she tries to take control of her drug addiction, being exploited by bullying relatives, and a pompous painter and his evil mother. Reference is made to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his wife Lizzie Siddal, a Pre-Raphaelite painter. Starred in Horn Book and Kirkus Review.

Pops is killed under unusual circumstances and Zac, who only half believed his grandfathers stories, is beginning to realize that these stories may actually be true and if he can’t solve the mystery and get to the truth his life may also be in danger. This adventure leads him to Ghana, where he comes face to face with the history of his people. His travels from England to Africa find him in jungles, caves and on the high seas. This is an exciting story with well-developed characters but the language with its many “Britishisms” can be difficult to follow. The flashbacks from the historical time period to present day also add to the confusion. This story is for the advanced reader who has a strong interesting the history of the slave trade of the early 1700’s.

P/M Kirkus Review (9/1/08) "dubious textual claim... soft illustration suit the heavily fictionalized... despite its flaws, will likely inspire young readers..."
M School Library Journal (10/1/08) "Unfortunately, a book that starts out as a promising introduction to Earhart's life ends abruptly... story is slight and feels unfinished... attractive...pencil and watercolor artwork, yet disappointing..."

Despite the previous published reviews, I found this book to be rather nice. The illustrations are indeed nice and add fun to the text. It is light in the information zone but for younger kids, it is probably enough. The book does not end with her final flight, but I guess this might be due again to the audience level. The book instead ends with her solo flight across the Atlantic - the first woman and only the second person to do this. The appendix is full of information which can be incorporated into the reading of the text by an adult. Included are additional facts about her life, a timeline, books, web sites, DVDs, places to visit, a bibliography, and an author's note. Although not necessarily a first purchase it shows Amelia's love for life and adventure. She did not listen to everyone telling her she could not do what she wanted. Our first graders have a story in their reader that will fit nicely with this book. Recommended

The book offers a look at "Citizenship" through this character education Picture Window Read-It! Reader. Three friends each have special talents and likes. However, when asked to work together to help the town park, it seems that they can't come to agreement. After speaking with Miss Moss, they finally decide to make a flower garden and each girl will add what their special talent addresses. Despite worries many people from town turn up to help with the work. Illustrations are cartoon style and support the text. Included are a "Citizen Day" project list, a glossary, several books and a FactHound link. The links are good this time - appropriate to age and interesting. There is only one other Character ed book in the series but maybe there will be more. The book did a nice job presenting the concept of citizenship for younger students. Recommended - High recommended as the situation fits.

This is one of six in the Colors set. The photos are the best part - they are wonderful, but..... There are questions about the level of the audience. The fact that colors are highlighted does not seem to match with the sentence structure or vocabulary. The information does cover a wide range but not in any depth. There is a very quick "Facts about Egypt" page that included four Arabic words and other facts. Included is also a glossary, "Read More" section, the "FactHound" internet site link (There were 2 links - only Enchanted Learning worked.), and an index. The pictures are nice but it is so information-light that this would have limited use in a media center for the price unless there was a need to a specific population. Additional

Part of the "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" book series. Truss is now showing how important the hyphen and other punctuation marks can be in making sense of sentences. As with the other books, a sentence with alternate punctuation is illustrated 2 different ways to accompany the change that the change of punctuation brings. Watercolors are still fun & definitely add to the change of meaning. There are several sentences that are pushing the issue, but most are fine. Get this if needed - can be fun for teaching Language Arts lessons.

(E.S.) The year is 1778, and we are introduced to frontiersman Daniel Boone, who is on a salt-finding mission with other settlers in Kentucky, while his family is at the established fort at Boonesborough, Ohio. As he heads back to the temporary Kentucky camp after a successful solo hunt, Boone is suddenly surrounded by fierce Shawnee warriors; he is then taken captive, and presented to their war chief, Blackfish, who explains that the Shawnee are looking for revenge since the settlers had previously murdered their Chief Cornstalk during a truce. Instead of violence, Boone negotiates a new agreement, and surrenders himself and his men to the Shawnees until springtime when he will return to the settlers and work on a compromise between the groups. The Shawnee march their prisoners to the Shawnee town of Old Chillocothe in Ohio, are “adopted into the tribe”, and remain with the Shawnee for months. Notwithstanding the kind treatment they receive from the tribe, Boone knows it will not last, and with the safety of Boone’s family most important, he decides to escape from Old Chillocothe. After secretive preparations, and an adventuresome escape, he reunites with his family. Spradin tells a story of one exciting episode in Daniel Boone’s existence, but Hoyt’s large, colorful illustrations bring the text to life, and do a great job portraying the action that Boone lived.

Children will enjoy this story about Jake, the 6-3/4 year-old big brother, who feels sad when Will's red balloon slips out of his hand. They watch it float away and Daddy says it's "off to the moon." A wild idea comes to Jake: to go to the Kennedy Space Center to ask if he can go to the moon so he can bring it back. And he does. This is a sweet story that shows what big brothers are for. The book will be welcomed by teachers and parents who want to explore feelings and kindness. It also provides information about what it's like to go into space in a rocket. Some illustrations in the manga style will appeal to those who are attracted by graphic novel. This is a feel-good gem.

Big Little Monkey just can’t wait for his family to wake up. He is big enough to find
someone else to play with, so he swings through the jungle, “bim-ba-lah, bim-ba-lah”. He meets Slow Sloth, but he’s too quiet. Next is Proud Parrot, who is too squawky. After that is Sly Boa, who is just a little bit too tricky. Little Monkey eventually finds himself back in the Big Mango Tree with the best playmates ever, his family. I found this book delightful. Oscar the cat learns about sound from his friend Bat in this entry in Candlewick's " A Start with Science Book" series for young children. Bat explains that some animals make talking sounds in their throats and points out the origins of other animal communication sounds. The book also explores other sounds that are loud or soft, near or far, deep or high. There is a summary of the science ideas Oscar found out about and an index at the back of the book. Author/illustrator Waring explains the concepts in simple language through an engaging story and the illustrations are simple in design, each a different background color with a large Oscar on every page. The sound noise words are written as a part of the illustration and are shown emanating from the source of the sound, which will engage visual learners and are visually pleasing, too. This will be useful in early elementary science units.

With current interest in the Harry Potter series and the Hobbit trilogy, this will be a good addition to the fantasy section. It will be enjoyed for its unique story and satisfying ending.

A quiet summer vacation in a small country village turns out to be anything but peaceful for Athene and her younger brother, Zach, when they find themselves caught up in a skirmish between two groups of magical, gnome-like creatures.
Twelve-year-old Athene does not like her six-year-old brother, Zachary. During a stay at a farmhouse, as she wanders the English countryside late at night, Athene discovers small people, Gloam. When Zach tags along on one of her outings, Athene tells him to take shelter in a hollow tree, knowing that he will be pulled underground by the Gloams. Now Athene must disguise herself as a Gloam and lead a search party underground, deep beneath the roots of the gnarled oak tree. To try to rescue her little brother, Athene will finally get her own adventure-- filled with mystery, magical spells and plenty of talking animals. She utilizes a magical tool for a thrilling final escape. Athene uses her intelligence, hard work, and skill to outwit her captors. She learns to have compassion and love for her brother and develops an understanding that there are good and bad in all creatures.

I agree with the reviews in Booklist and Kirkus which state that while the text is "impassive," and "unconnected" the colored pencil illustrations of "rubbery-faced old ladies," relishing life with secret admirers, fine wine by the side of the pool, and enjoying each other are the strongest part of this book. School Library Journal suggests that some young readers may be inspired to find their own "little old ladies," and ask for a story or two.

H.S. Sixteen-year-old Sabine Durand is being raised by her aristocratic but not particularly wealthy parents in Paris in 1776. The American revolutionary, Ben Franklin is all the rage and Sabine and her mother can’t wait to meet him. What Sabine’s social climbing mother doesn’t see is that Sabine’s mind is being opened by the revolutionary thought that is running rampant through Paris at this time. Sabine’s mother is thrilled with the marriage she has arranged for her daughter, but Sabine has other ideas of her own on the subject, especially since she has become reacquainted with her childhood friend Michel, the son of her maid. This is an interesting look at this period in history in Paris but unless the reader has knowledge of the happenings during this time period, the story itself doesn’t shed much light. Voltaire’s Candide and the French artist Fragonard, play a role in the story though the average reader may not be aware that they are real people and not just fictional characters. This book may be helpful for the student who is studying this time period in Paris or has read Candide.

H.S. Honey and Agnes are 14 years old and the best of friends. They are growing up in what appears to be an idyllic setting in rural Connecticut but things aren’t always what they seem. This book is based on the author’s own life growing up in a religious commune. Agnes is completely enamored with the life she is leading, and tries to emulate the Saints that she reads about in “Lives of the Saints”, Honey, abandoned at the commune when she was an infant, rebels at every turn. Though they are very different both girls can’t wait for the yearly visit from Nana Pete, Agnes’s father’s mother. Nana Pete makes a surprise visit and learns about the dirty little secrets taking place at Mount Blessing. She decides to “kidnap” the girls and Agnes’s brother for their protection. Honey is thrilled but Agnes is appalled. This is where things get a bit contrived. At the end of their trip, the group meets up with Nana Pete’s daughter and family ties are reveled. Despite the twisted end the story does a good job of shedding light on the complexities of life in a religious cult and the characters are realistic and elicit the readers sympathy and caring.

Eleanor Taylor's My Friend Monster, is the story of little Louis. Louis has just moved into a new house and goes from room to room inspecting and creating echoes in the empty space. When he goes to bed that night, he finds a monster under his bed, luckily for Louis the monster is more scared than he is. The monster winds up sleeping in Louis' bed and comes to breakfast the next morning. Louis takes the monster to the playground and he becomes monumental in helping make new friends. The artwork is very cute, featuring a family of foxes and a large green monster, and is very expressive of the characters emotions. The story itself is wonderfully sweet and will be reassuring to a child in a new situation or needing to make new friends.

Utterlly Otterly Day by Mary Casanova is the cute tale of an impish otter who would rather play and explore than heed his parent's advice to "be careful, stay close". Various predators attempt to grab him but he gets away each time, the last time escaping the clutches of a cougar when the whole otter family fends the cougar off. The point of the story is Little Otter "needs his family-no matter how big he grows". The watercolor illustrations are cute though I found the story to be lackluster. This is a nice simple tale for 3-5 year olds to reinforce the safety lesson of staying close to one's parents/family when out in the big bad world. It just isn't terribly inspired.

"The Aliens Are Coming!" by Colin McNaughton is narrated by a rather awkward rhyming story. It describes many different space aliens and their languages. The descriptions and pictures are cartoonish and loud. With such phrases as, "The chance of peace talks? I'd say BLEAK! The aliens are coming!" the young reader is set up to be fearful of the aliens coming. In what was meant to be a clever twist, there is a mirror at the end of the book, which shows who scared the aliens off (the reader of course). This ploy did nothing to improve the lame story, the descriptions and dopy pictures left me cold.

But poor Linden only knows he likes to make people happy. With prayers to God, the support of his family and a visit to the dentist, Linden finds his “it”, his way to make people happy. I found this book to be a nice story with a message, without being too preachy. Hopefully children will realize that with hard work and the help of God, their dreams are possible. The illustrations are bright and colorful, perfectly depicting a loving and supportive family. The faultlessly bolster the text.

Bear is saved by his friends again in this latest offering to the successful Bear adventures. Just as in “Bear Feels Sick” the forest friends start to worry and not a minute too late. When Bear does not come home on a stormy night the animals form a search party, bundle up, and trudge out into the night to find him. It is not long before he is spotted “ten feet from his lair” looking sacred. They all give him a hug and go home for bed and stories. This new addition to the collection about an adventure with Bear does not disappoint. The rhyming text is nice to read and sounds great. The illustrations are stormy enough to make the reader feel how scared Bear must be. Children will relate to the getting lost theme.

This book has a great title and I was hoping for a great story on the inside. I was very disappointed. The story comes from the author’s Rootabaga Stories that were originally told to his daughters. In this retelling the story is disjointed and confusing. The dancing shoes are a little frightening and it does not really give a valid reason about the shoe and the moon. It is even difficult to read. The advice from Mr. Wishes doesn’t make sense and it is hard to tell why we need to know that our shoes come to life while we sleep. A slipper does get kicked at the moon and never comes back, but I do not recommend the book.

Unless you pay very close attention to the first page you will not understand the point of the story and you will have to read it again. If you do not realize that the mom on the phone is ordering the cake from the miniature construction worker you will miss the point of the small construction site building a regular sized cake. That said, upon my second reading I realized what was going on and it made a little more sense. It is a fantasy and boys who like trucks might like to pretend to make cakes in the sandbox, however the scale of the pictures is confusing since the ingredients are full sized and the construction equipment and people are miniature. They did “build” a beautiful cake. It might have a limited audience.

This would be for E.S.
This is a green level “Read it! Readers” Tongue Twisters offering from Picture Window Books. I found it extremely silly and over-done. As one can deduce from the title, the tongue twisters are concentrating on the beginning /b/ sound. However, what starts as a “battle” to see who has the best pancake batter turns into a food fight and a mess in the kitchen. All is cleaned up and the winning batter is mixture of the two, but in an effort to include so many /b/ words, which was the point, I feel it is cumbersome to read and do not recommend it.

This book for E.S. This is the newest offering in this series about the cat and dog friends, Houndsley and Catina. They are snowed in on the day of their evening performance of a musical concert in the park. Catina is stressed and worried that it will be canceled and Houndsley wants to show her how to be thankful for the quiet and break they have been given due to the storm. Instead of curling her whiskers and getting her hair done the friends read books, write poems, and dream. They even venture outside and build a snowman. At the end of the day they are dug out and the concert is held. Catina finally realized what a gift the day had been and learned that it is nice to spend quiet time with your friends.
I liked this very well written and illustrated book. The words allow the reader to contrast Catina's anger with Houndsley's peace. It will remind the reader that slowing down sometimes is a great thing and a snow day is perfect for some quiet time.

(E.S. reading level) Young Luke Pennybaker completes all of his chores but still isn‘t allowed to watch TV. As he contemplates the unfairness of life, he decides to try to make things better for children throughout the USA. And so, his candidacy for president begins. Running on the “Birthday Party” ticket, Luke’s platform espouses messy rooms, unlimited access to dessert and pets for every child - in other words, the pursuit of happiness. His enthusiasm is contagious as he campaigns across the country and despite the fact that he can’t even vote, he wins the election. Once in office, Luke realizes that the responsibilities of normal childhood are preferable to the responsibilities of adult life and resigns, leaving the job in the capable paws of his running mate, Lily the dog. This is an amusing introduction to the election process for young children, and the charming illustrations keep the reader entertained. It takes a lighthearted approach to the topic and is a welcome addition to election themed books for early elementary students.

This book lives up to the series name, Math Fun, and delivers an entertaining yet comprehensive overview of the concept of fractions (E.S. reading level). It begins by defining a fraction as one or more equal parts of a whole, then goes on to introduce the most common fractions (halves, thirds, fourths, eighths). At the end of the book, comparison of fractions is explained, as is the possibility of subdividing fractions (i.e. halves into fourths). Reinforcing the simply stated examples with brightly colored illustrations makes this a very child friendly book. It would certainly help teachers who are introducing fractions to their young students by making the information accessible and fun.

H.S. After a group of terrorists released a plague virus intended to kill a certain group of people, something happens that was not planned; all adults and older teenagers worldwide perish. During a vacation with their families at the amusement park, Isles of Wonder, a group of children and young teens, survived the bio-terrorist attack. Now stranded and alone, a group of kids, whose parents were employed at the park, work together to keep the park running for the two thousand kids and young teens. Milo, whose father was an engineer at the park, has taken command as leader of the Core, posing himself as King Neptune. He and a group of select kids slowly organize their world. But when strange and dangerous events occur, some kids begin to question the leadership of the Core. Dobkin’s story is reminiscent of Golding’s Lord of the Flies (but with a lot more gadgets and technology) and the design of Walt Disney World’s famous Utilidor (the underground utility corridor that houses everything to efficiently run the park.) It is filled with human emotion and the bonds of human relationship, survival skills, leadership with too much power, and the dangers involved. Includes a map of the park in the front. Horn Book gives it a positive review.

Vunce Upon A Time is a cute little tale about a vegetarian vampire with a sweet tooth. Dagmare, the vampire, loves candy, but is afraid to go outside and is fearful of humans. When a skeleton friend tells Dagmar about Halloween, he decides to be brave and go trick or treating. The kindness of a young girl, who shows him how Halloween works, persuades him not to be afraid. A nice story that shows how small acts of kindness can have a big effect on a child’s life. The illustrations are full of color and movement. A good choice to pump up an old, tired Halloween collection.

An adorable rhyming book for pre-school and kindergarten students about two stuffed puppies in a plane on patrol to protect the toys in the house. They fly over dad's head-"mountaintop", see a "patch of fog" tea kettle, "cruise the creek" water in the sink, etc. The illustrations are colorful and made to scale. Gerald plays with the toy and breaks it apart. Piggie and Gerald think the toy is broken permanently but when a squirrel comes along and snaps it back together all is fine with the world. This is a great story for teaching the young child that all is not lost or broken. Just take your time and figure things out.

Eli Treebuckle, the hero of this story, is a young boy who “is the fixer of all things fixable”. He works tirelessly on his mother’s fan, vacuum cleaner and anything else that will postpone his going to sleep. He has the same nightmares every night. He vows never to go to sleep again.
One night when his mother has gotten him into bed he is visited by the moon. The moon tells him that the reason he is always having nightmares is because there is no moonpowder left. Eli asks what moonpowder is and the moon says, “Moonpowder is a magical marvel, a masterful miracle, a mystical masterpiece…” and Eli must find a way to fix the moonpowder factory. There are no dreams left so Eli must go find the Special Emergency Dream Kit. It is in Mother Nature’s closet.
Even though it sounds easy to rectify the problem there are many things that can go wrong in retrieving the kit.
Eli has many adventures but in the end he gets the moonpowder factory fixed.
There is an underlying situation that is displayed through the illustrations. Eli’s father is away at the war (WWII) and his nightmares are the direct result of this. The illustrations are wonderful. There are full page illustrations. Some pages are picture in picture. The “man in the moon” is portrayed as a pockmarked being with arms and legs.

General reading level: E.S., M.S.
This realistic fiction story takes place in 1983, with a family of 5--Mom, Dad, Evan who is 15, Andy who is 17, and Samantha called Sam who is 12. They seem to have a healthy family life, and further reading reveals Mom is active...maybe too active... in the community as a member of several committees, and Dad has a great job...maybe too great. While the kids are pretty independent, Evan and Sam suffer from lack of attention, while the star of the family is Andy, who is a high school senior getting ready to woo colleges with his athletic talent. The story focuses on Evan, who is interested in arts not athletics. As a result, Evan's parents have little hope for his future. Sam and Evan stick together. Eventually Evan tells Sam that he cannot read, while Sam is shocked, she is more surprised to learn that the other family members are aware of this situation--they just choose to ignore the presence of the learning disability. It would be too embarrassing for the family if others to know. With the help of an elderly neighbor, who encourages Evan to stand up for himself, and inspired by the flight of the night owls, Evan is able to take his own flight and confront his family with the reality of his problem. The story does not have a definitive ending, but the reader is left encouraged that Evan will get the help he needs with his family's support.

Turtle retaliates with an invite of his own to his underwater home that requires Anansi to hold on to a crab to keep from floating away, causing him to miss all the fun. In the mystery animal party, guessing game Anansi wins the prize of 8 balloons only to be carried away to the moon. “ On nights when the moon is full, you may see shapes on the moon’s surface. Cumulative text reveals who was really responsible for the house that Jack claims to have built, and describes all of the trucks involved, from the bulldozer used to clear the land to the van that brought a hammock for the back yard that carried away Jack.
There is a joke lurking for readers in Beil's twist on the classic cumulative tale of the house that Jack built. Max introduces readers to bulldozers and backhoes and forklifts, and a handful of trucks: cement, rack, boom and dump. . The text chugs along with no surprises--"This is the van / that brought the hammock, cozy and snug / where the trees were planted / and the roof was nailed / and the windows were framed..."--until Jack gets what he deserves and Max gets his reward for his hard work.

Billed by the publisher as historical fiction, this story of Lam Hung, a Vietnamese scout, charged with guiding American soldiers through the jungle during the Vietnam war. Since Lam Hung was once a Viet Cong, the Americans have difficulty trusting him. Lam Hung proves his loyalty by guiding the soldiers to safety. They finally accept him. This "graphic flash" novel contains cartoon-like pictures to accompany the story, yet the speech bubbles do little to advance the story. This slight story does little to help readers understand the war.

In this beginning reader chapter book, Alice the Anteater, who lives in the jungle, reads a magazine about Christmas. She discovers that others receive Christmas presents, and begins asking why anteaters do not receive Christmas presents. No one has an answer for her, since no one has even heard of Christmas. Alice decides to travel to the North Pole to ask Santa Claus why he does not include them in the Christmas celebration. Finally, arriving at the North Pole, Santa tells Alice that anteaters have not received gifts because they have not requested any. Alice returns home, and all the anteaters send Santa letters requesting gifts. They do, and when Christmas arrives all the anteaters receive their requests. Alice sends Santa a letter of thanks.
